Interview with Krypt (Classic interviews)

1. Greetings to Oslo, and now to the point. At the beginning I´ll ask you a question which you had to answer in every interview I guess. Why you stopped activities in Tsjuder two years ago?

Time changes and we lost our inspiration to continue at this point. From the beginning until some years back we have had a great inspiration and were working very much with Tsjuder. So, it was better to stop, than to continue without the inspiration we need.

2. I don´t know how were Tsjuder popular in Norway but here in the central Europe, Tsjuder are not so well-known, despite the band´s qualities. What do you think, why Tsjuder hadn't made it into the absolute Black metal peak?

We never tried to gain any popularity, and we didn't play too much live.

3. But the Tsjuder´s era is behind us and before us is your new band Krypt. You started it with Desecrator who was also Tsjuder´s member. Tell why you parted ways in Tsjuder and what made you to start a new band with him?

We agreed upon putting Tsjuder on hold, and I had already started to think about playing in a new band, or at least with other people. Desecrator had thought about the same for many years, and it was just naturally for us to join forces and create Krypt together.

4. Right after dismissal of Tsjuder you started Krypt. Do you had some plans with Krypt when you were quitting the band or you thought about the new band later?

As I said, I had been thinking about playing in another band for some time, but since Tsjuder has always been my priority I never did. When we decided to put Tsjuder on hold I wanted to start a new band. Luckily Desecrator also had the same in mind, so then we started Krypt together.

5. Material of your new band is logically quite different from the previous band. Krypt are musically more hitting and sonically plainer project. Few bands like this appeared for some time. It also looked for a while that Black metal could take new direction like it was showed by a newer Enslaved, Sonic reign, Watain (on the last cd) and particularly even Satyricon. Every named band gave it´s music new and unmistakable manuscript. But then it suddenly died. And no more bands of similar type showed. Wha t do you think about it and why you picked out this more rock-influenced genre of black metal?

I have never spent too much time thinking about it. I have always wanted to play what I like, and I don't care what others do. In regards to Krypt, both Desecrator and I agree upon the same thing. We have never tried to make any music, we just play / create what we like. The result is just a big mix of all music that we have been influenced by. So, we are not trying to do anything groundbreaking…

6. Lets go into the present… Year after the 2-songs EP "I am God" , which tried to draw attention upon Krypt , you are releasing your debut album "Preludes to death" (An interview will be published after the release of the new album). What do you think… Which aspects should would draw the listener and what are the strongest points of the album?

Well, I'm very satisfied with the album. I reflect me and Desecrator. I think the album has much variation, with both blast beats from Hell, to slow groovy parts. It's made out of the inspiration we have from bands from the 80s and 90s, so that's how it turned out. I'm happy with the sound, which is a good production, but still extreme and raw.

7. According to a myspace sample it looks like the new album will continue in the same vein as shown on EP. Is the Preludes to death going to sound like this on whole album?

Yes, it will continue in the same vein as "I am God" was just a taste of what's to come. The Ep can be looked upon as a demo which was released on CD and Vinyl, while we have spent much more time on the album to make it sound good. Both the two songs from the Ep are re-recorded on the album.

8. Your music is released through Agonia records. I think that it is one of the best European labels when concerning about the customer and musicians. Do you agree?

I'm happy with Agonia, and for us it's the best label at the moment. We have no thoughts about changing label.

9. Are you planning some major tour after the release of Preludes to death? Its not easy to arrange it isn't it? In addition Krypt are not so famous to attract big amounts of people in working days. Are the Agonia records opened for this kind of touring?

No, we are not planning any tours. We will however play at the Under the Black Sun festival this summer. We have been asked several times to tour already, and Agonia really wants us to do that. But, we are just two members, so it's harder to arrange.

10. After 2 years of activity with Krypt it looks that just like Tsjuder you new band is full of satanic images, profanation and pain. How are you going with these aspects in your personal life? Are they present in your clothing, working, leisure time and other things? Or you just let those things go out through the music? In short are somehow weird for the neighborhood?

Yes, that's natural. I wouldn't change my opinions and beliefs even though I'm playing in another band. I'm not trying to do anything in my personal life. I am myself, that's it. Well, dark clothes are preferred…

11. Satanism, death worship are not so popular in black metal these days. I suggest that you know that miserable bands are usually hiding behind these words and instead of pursuing musical quality they want to be as true as possible. What's your opinion? Do you think that a band should be interested more in music than in image?

For me it's not an image, it's a reflection of who I am. Nag is a reflection of me… Well, when I listen to music, I seek bands which play good music in my ears. They can be as satanic as they wish, but if their music sucks, it's not interesting for me.

12. Krypt and previously also Tsjuder are shielded by the TNBM mark. Except what we can read from the logo what is the membership in "True Norwegian Black Metal" means? What the band must accomplish to be a part of this group?

TNBM is a quality mark, meaning those bands that use this mark is recognized by the Norwegian scene. You need to accomplish to make great quality Black Metal, and you have to be in contact with those who allow you to use the mark.

13. In France similar group "Les legions noires" existed. Can we somehow compare LLN with TNBM? Or it is just congregation of people with similar views?

Since I don't know what LLN is, I'm not sure. But I guess it's a similarity. TNBM is a circle of people and bands, yes, and we all know each other somehow.

14. Except Krypt and Tsjuder another members of TNBM are Ljaa, Taake... But there is more is it?

Carpathian Forest, Urgehal, Deathcult, Beastcraft, + + +

15. Norwegian scene profits from it´s glory in 90´s , when it started the whole Black metal movement and it was really best in it. It´s former supremacy is not so evident nowadays. So tell us about some new Norwegian bands which are worthy to listen, and are not so known in rest of Europe.

Well, there are bands such as Endezzma, Mord, Deathcult, Vulture Lord, Beastcraft, Secht… and also the more known ones such as Carpathian Forest, Urgehal, Koldbrann, …

16. And what about you personally? Except Tsjuder you also played in Isvind. So are the Krypt now your only band?

Krypt is my only band. I will also play live with Beastcraft for their one and only gig. Desecrator will also play with Beastcraft, and is also playing drums for Endezzma.

17. It was pleasure to write these questions and last words, as it is common in our zine, are yours…

Thanks for supporting Krypt and raw and brutal Black Metal!
