Interview with Wine From Tears (Classic interviews)

1. Greetings to Russia! I was reading the biography which is published on your website and it seems to me that since 2002 the band has experienced perhaps more personnel changes then many other bands had during decades. How does it affect the aspects of musical and composing side? Do you describe the current lineup as an ideal one, or not?

Hello you too. Every band experiences personnel changes, and we are not an exception. It were hard times for us. Nowadays there are only two of us, who are in the band from it's beginning.

As you already said there were a lot of changes.. but it didn't affected on our music, because we write it, we, those who has created the band and it's mood.
The current line-up is the best we ever had. Nowadays we are a great family!
And I hope it will never change, I believe it!

2. Wine From Tears was found in 2002 but the first album was released much later, in March 2009. Is the reason that it took so long time the personnel problems, or other things? But we also know that you have been playing on concerts almost since the band started its existence.

Certainly, the general problem was the personnel changes. But we also thought about the quality of the first album. We had to make it good. Our playing level in 2009 differs a lot from 2002. In 2002 we couldn't record it clear and qualitative.
We play much better now...huh (laugh).
There was also financial problem, we had no money to pay a good studio.

3. Let’s now talk about the debut album “Through the Eyes of a Mad”. Here the band represents its self as a grown up group with a flair for composing. There is perhaps no stagnating moments, but I have to mention that you rely on melodiousness, which is maybe easier to absorb for the listeners. How would you describe “Through the Eyes of a Mad”?

“Through the Eyes of a Mad” is what we are. We have been obliged to make it the most sincere, to show us from inside, to bring our truly feelings and emotions to people.
We tried as much as possible, and we did it...

4. The debut is recorded with a great sound; where did you record it and how much time did this whole process take? I must say that thanks to this sound many little things didn’t just disappear, even thought this is not that kind of music where people must listen extra carefully during the whole play time... But you know what I mean.

The debut was recorded on "Step By Step" records. It is in our city.
This is the best studio in our city.
It took a year and a half to make the album from the beginning to the end.
It was our first experience and I believe the next one will take only a year or something about. We were well prepared for the record, that's why I think we did it good, and we have also enclosed our souls in it...we tried a lot....for you (laugh).

5. What about the lyrics on “Through the Eyes of a Mad”? Is it mostly sad or melancholic songs? For me It is very difficult to say, because from musical aspect has the album a little bit strange tint, so the feeling is never clear. Was it natural to compose in English or was it just a step forward to international comprehension?

The lyrics of “Through the Eyes of a Mad” is closely connected with it's name.
This is a mix of critical melancholy, sadness, despair and most of all - madness!
My mind often plays malicious jokes with me....I'm serious... I just can't keep it in my head for so long...that's why I write about it, some emotions, thoughts.....and then I feel better.

I studied linguistics at the International University, so there are no problems for me to write in English. International comprehension also takes place.

6. What would you mention as your biggest musical inspiration, persons or bands…? Do you as a group have any favourites...?

Sure...we are fans of such bands as Paradise Lost, Saturnus, My Dying Bride, Anathema, Lacrimas Profunde etc. There are a lot of bands you know; not even doom metal bands. We love music!

7. Do you feel like people connected with music of Wine from Tears? Is it a natural reflection of what is inside of you, your feelings...? Or is it only a part of your personality and music that you simply like?

Wine From Tears is a reflection of us. I can't imagine my life without it... This is all my life!

8. Because of the language barriers – the level of English in Russia is usually not very good – we don’t make interviews with Russian bands very often. That’s why I would like to ask, how do you see the metal scene in this enormous big country? What part of Russia do you come from?

We are from Samara. It's a big, beautiful city not far from our capital.
There are a lot of metal bands and metal festivals in Russia. And most of the bands are good....they rock, really!

9. This is all from me. Now is place for you, if you would like to tell something to Czech audience... Good luck in the future.

It is very pleasant for us, that you decided to mention us. We didn't expect it...that's cool! (laugh)

I hope you enjoyed “Through the Eyes of a Mad”! And we hope one day you'll invite our modest collective to your beautiful country to play for you!

Thank you very much! Bye!
