Interview with Gnaw Their Tonques (Classic interviews)

1. Greetings! How do you do? You have released two new albums of Gnaw Their Tongues and De Magia Veterum this year and you’re also working on two Aderlating splits. Do you ever take a break from composing?

Actually yes, since the summer I’ve been taking it a little slower. I don’t wanna burn up. I’ve been working on stuff, but very slowly compared to what I’m used too.

2. GTT got a new album out called “All the Dread Magnificence of Perversity”. Could you introduce this album somehow? I have a feeling that there is a much more detailed work behind “All the Dread…” than ever before…

I guess it’s more detailed. It also took giant amounts of work. Many late hours editing/ arranging sounds and compositions. It’s become a real monster with a wide range of sounds. From very bombastic/filmic compositions too dark chaotic ‘swans’ worship stuff to almost ambient sounds. It’s a deep and personal misanthropic expression.
Many reviews so far have been great, but they all mention how ‘dark’ ‘noisy’ it is. But actually there are many technical achievements buried beneath the (at first hand) chaotic sounds. Some people mention random drums, when it’s actually very advanced polyrythms going on. Where the drums play a variation of 5/4 and 7/4 rythms, while the bass does ¾ and 4/4 stuff like that. But I admit, it’s all buried beneath sounds of true horror!

3. When I compare the novelty with the older albums I think that the levels of noise seriously decreased. Old ones were always a bit ear-raping. Was this an intention or it has changed because of quality of recording? I’m also wondering If you play those stringed instruments yourself or you’re using samples.

I think I advanced a little on the production site of things. Those early recordings sometimes suffered from poor production decisions. Some time they were intentional noisy, sometimes not!. Most violins/cello’s are samples loaded into a sampler. Some are real played by friends, and I also record them myself (in a poor way). GTT has always been a mixture of real and sampled stuff. Although lately I’m using less and less samples.

4. How close do you feel to the term of “improvisation”? Are you trying to stick to some pre-arranged idea or you’re trying what fits into the music? I am interested in your compositional process in general. Don’t you get lost sometimes in all those layers sound?

Some of my music is improvised. It keeps things fresh and unexpected. If improvised, I play along with already recorded music/loops and then use the most interesting parts. But most of the time things are composed in a traditional way. Many different things can start compositions: a riff, a melody in my head, an atmosphere I want to create. Sometimes a sample, whatever. Often things get switched over completely. Like a middle part becoming the beginning etc. That’s what I like about doing music, the arrangement/composition side of it.
As for getting lost in layers: yes it happens. Sometimes I look at a sequencer track and think, what the fuck is that sound?. If you work on a track for three months with over 40 different sequencer tracks, you can get lost. I ‘solo’ out the track and there is another buried sound. :-)

5. You have also released new album with De Magia Veterum entitled “Migdal Bavel”. Have you received any reactions yet? I would say that DMV is a more accessible for the common metal listener although it is still pretty unnerving.

The reviews of Migdal Bavel have all been VERY good (see blog DMV myspace)! I have not seen a bad one yet. But DMV is not for everyone. ‘Normal’ metal listeners will probably think it’s a big mess. But that’s not a problem. I wanted to create something that was different/original and good. And I think I succeeded. DMV was actually there before GTT. One of the free DMV ep’s have been downloaded over 12.000 times! For me that is a great confirmation that I´m doing something right!

6. By the way, is there some concept behind “Migdal Bavel”? I would say that the album is inspired by the bible more than any of your other projects.

Yes, it’ inspired by the bible/Gnostic texts, but also many other ancient cultures as well as occult subjects.

7. After we’ve touched the conceptual side of your projects, could you elaborate more about it? Perversion, man’s degradation and repulsion is very evident in your work. Why you chose such subjects and where are you taking inspiration?

The general shitty state of the world, and my growing misanthropy and nihilism. It’s all a bit personal. Most of the time I’m quite a nice guy, but i have my moods and periods of anti-socialism (like most people I guess). That foul mood fuels the fire of my music.

8. Aderlating was created in order to play live, but you’re also presenting new music with this project. Maybe we could say that Aderlating sounds like GTT without black metal, do you agree? What does Aderlating really mean for you?

Well Aderlating also features ‘black metal’ but more in a trance/noise kind of way. Aderlating is more drone/ambient than GTT. And more improvisation. I just want to play live with this kind of music. I see so many crap bands live (metal and none metal) that I want to bring something different. Total low frequency horror!

9. In any case, after every listening of “The Nectar Of Perversity…” I feel very nauseating and my head wants to explode… Villain! Confess that you put some subliminal effects into your music!

Are you referring to the whole cd or that song? The song is one of my most accomplished tracks actually. The drum sample is from an old horror movie. Real monotonous pounding with all the feedback hiss and vocals. It works really well. The subliminal effects are in your own head. 

10. You have already played several concerts under Aderlating moniker. Could you please tell us where did you play and how those gigs looked like? What was the audience’s reaction like? Do you enjoy playing live?

Well most concerts there was a low turn up, but I seems that most people who where there liked it. I enjoy playing live. I enjoy screaming horrors into the room and beating up my drumkit. And hanging out with Erik who also play in Aderalting. In November where going to New York and play the Apexfest! That’s a big deal for us!

11. By the way If I am correct, Gnaw Their Tongues were scheduled to play on this year’s Roadburn festival. Under which moniker you played there?

Aderlating. GTT will never play live.

12 I won’t ask you about your other projects in detail so if you’re interested please introduce the rest.

I got a few others, but they are secret.

13. Formerly you were spreading your albums mainly through the internet, but now it’s a bit different. Have the labels started to give you a bigger attention, or you think that your music deserves a better and more dignified release?

The labels definitely got me more attention. Their PR does a great job. I’ve featured in many magazines and on a lot of Websites. When I started with DMV/GTT I had no plan/wishes. So everything that comes my way is a big bonus! Releasing vinyl was always a dream, and now it has happened.

15. And one clichéd question, what do you think about downloading music in general? 

I think it’s unavoidable. Why fight it? Embrace it. True fans will buy cd’s/lp’s and other merchandise. I download a lot. Stuff I like, I buy. A couple of mp3’s on your harddisc is not the same as holding the real thing in your hands. I’m now in the process of getting all my sold out stuff as a PAY WHAT YOU WANT download on my myspace site.

16. What about your future plans? Could you give us a summary of stuff we can look forward to?

All plans are a bit vague but here goes:
Aderlating: a split with NEKRASOV (hopefully a 12 inch lp). Another full length (download ony).
GTT: a special packaged split cd with a very well known ‘noise’ artist (end of this year) A split LP with Corephalism (Shane Broderick of Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck). Two compilation appearance.
And ep/full lenght? Not sure yet, but it will be different from eveything i’ve done so far.

Full lenght: Escatological Scatology. Mostly fast black metal. Old and new stuff that didn't fit the other full lenghts. Completely reworked/remixed/remastered. Only unreleased stuff. Coming end of 2009.

Split: with Painforged (limited Cdr to 50).

17. We’re at the end so let’s relieve things. Personally I would say that this year was very strong in terms of music. Have you been really pleased with some albums or gigs? If you were hooked by some books or movies etc. feel free to talk about them if you want.

Some music I like this year: Ruins of Beverast. Maudlin of the well, Portal, Black Boned Angel. I’ve seen A LOT of movies but not many that stood out. Maybe Antichrist by Lars van Triers, that was fucking intense.

Thank you very much for the interview. I hope that we will meet someday at Aderlating gig in Czech Republic. Take care!
