Interview with Imperium Dekadenz (2010) (Classic interviews)

1. Hello guys! It’s more than two years when we interviewed IMPERIUM DEKADENZ first time, so what happened in your “camp” between 2008-2010? I remember that you just were at the beginning with doing live shows etc. Are there some important news in your biography like line-up changes, etc.?

We played some concerts last year and we are really pleased with the reactions. Our live members are a real treasure for us. They are more than band members, they are good friends. We hope to keep them as long as possible in our empire. They have their own band project. It’s called VARGSHEIM. Raw emotional Black Metal with epic and also Rock elements. Of curse we produced “Procella Vadens” and spent an amount of work and money in it. We are looking forward to the official release date to close another chapter.

2. You’re back after three years with a new album “Procella Vadens”. Do you feel that this album is going to be the best one in your discography - if yes, why?

First attention you will get is by the sound. It’s stronger and deeper and involves the listener more into the scene. We gave the material to a professional studio (Iguana Studios) for the mastering process. We also did some changing’s for the recording process and improved the performance. What we got is what you here,… a more majestic sound-scape. The songs went a very long way over the months. We got more and more ideas and finally the songs became more detailed. Every song has an own character, because they were written in very different periods of our lives. Of curse, again we had the target to create a very emotional atmosphere, taking you on a voyage beyond daily life.

3. Did you change something in locality where you’ve recorded previous and actual album? How much time it took? Did you record it in two (Ulfhednar and Vespasian) as in the past?

The song writing and recording process was exactly the same like with “Dämmerung der Szenarien” and it was only Vespasian and Horaz. We recorded in our studio in Villingen (Black Forest/Germany). Now we have a new one in a village next Villingen. The recordings started in November 2008 and ended in March 2009. Editing, mixing and mastering ended in August 2009.

4. Personally, I’m very satisfied about the sound - it’s darker and more atmospheric as on previous releases. Did you plan to make the sound in this vein?

We want a more professional sound without losing the typical rawness, coldness and darkness. Without these elements a lot of atmosphere goes lost. But we are not old DARKTHRONE, we have also epic, majestic and dramatic elements which are in combination with the other elements leading to the typical IMPERIUM DEKADENZ atmosphere. So, we decided us for a stronger and deeper sound o support this aspect.

5. Is there some concept or idea behind the album – musically, lyrically, in artwork etc.?

The whole album can be seen as a voyage, over variable mystical landscapes or maybe a voyage through life. The cover artwork illustrates a scene of that voyage … maybe the end of it. You can see a storm as a destructive force of nature or a possibility to learn more about your self in an extreme situation. ‘Procella Vadens” is a voyage through a storm which gives you the possibility to discover your mind and thoughts a journey over mountains and oceans, winter forests and Mediterranean coasts, ancient battlefields and personal experiences.

6. I’ve noticed that you’ve done a little language change. Previous album was more towards German language, but “Procella Vadens” have song titles in three languages. Have this any specific reason? Who is the author of the lyrics?

We planned a long time ago to use also Latin and French. French because Vespasians father is French and he has a strong association with it. Latin transports perfect an elegy atmosphere which we also want to express with the songs. By the way, the Latin titles have German lyrics. We are not that good with Latin to write complete Latin lyrics, hehehe.

7. In first question, I talked about live shows. Are you playing live a lot? And the most important part of the question; will be some tour after release of a new album?

We played only four concerts last year. In 2010 we will concentrate us for live shows in Germany and European countries. We are still in discussions with organizers of festivals and concerts, so I can’t tell you much about what will happen this year. If there are any organizers of Czech festivals etc., reading this interview, don’t hesitate to contact us.

8. If you’re creating new songs, do you thing about live performances? I’ve noticed that the new album has some elements which are new for IMPERIUM DEKADENZ. Personally I call your new album “intelligent black metal”, hehe…

Yes, we think about if a song is dedicated to play it live. “Ego Universalis” and “Lacrimae Mundi” are melodic and a bit harder stuff of Imperium Dekadenz. Those songs have the power which supporting the energy of a live show. “Million Moons” and “An Autumn Serenade” have a long playing time. Some people get bored with such long mid tempo songs. But we are looking forward to play these songs if we will get enough playing time and if the reactions will be good.

9. My last question; year 2009 was full of good music and interesting releases, are you satisfied with it at all? I mean from personal and musical side… Can you drop some good albums from 2009?

Fantastic albums I bought last year were: COLD WORLD – Melancholie², PRIMORDIAL – To the nameless Dead and LIFELOVER – Konkurs. I know these albums are older than 2009, but still rotating in my player, hehe
