Interview with Nefarium (Classic interviews)

1. Greetings Carnifex! Your new album is going to be released soon so how do you feel after the long working process? Are you looking forward to have the CD finally in your hands?

We worked really hard to achieve our goal producing “Ad Discipulum” and at the end we are particularly satisfied. Each song required a specific engagement from the first idea to the recordings and we focused to create a unique concept through lyrics and music, we’ve finally created a true statement against the church and Jesus Christ words through priests speeches and Vatican prayers.

Our current label Agonia is trying to push very well the full-lenght and this time the album will be realized in digipack version, we can’t see the time to get some copies.

2. Are you satisfied with all work you’ve done at “Ad Discipulum”? Could you zoom for our readers what are the most interesting points on the album and eventually if you implemented some elements that are new for your music?

We absolutely wanted to follow our own way and we think with “Ad Disciplum”,we have finally found Nefarium sound.

The new album is fast, aggresive and blasphemic Black Metal and that’s simply what we like to play and what we think Black Metal should be, anyway It’s necessary to explain some more details:

When Nefarium discussed the first time about Ad Discipulum’s sound, wishing to obtain something new, we decided we should have moved to Swedish Sonic Train Studios and to collaborate with a not Black Metal producer, basically to remark the dynamic and natural style of Garghuf drumming.

We choose to avoid an artificial sound of the drum due to the currently tendency of using exaggerated trigger, risking to obtain less precise tom’s feelings, but surely more natural, we marked a global style more original in front of our previous releases.
Even if the whole album is really fast and aggressive.
we think that Ad Discipulum’s songs are easier to be assimilated by the listeners.

3. I personally think that the new album will be again uncompromising work against all Christian crackpots, so let’s talk about the main theme. How about the lyrics? Are the lyrics conceptual work? What is the biggest message of “Ad Discipulum”?

For the preparation of all the lyrics we inspired by the Bible, although we don't believe in the truthfulness of the that book and in the effectiveness of the relevant teachings. We do not believe that the succession of precise historical facts (if ever existed), as well as death, resurrection and the details of the story of Jesus we influence in the development and the spread of the Christian religion, but we collocate this doctrine to every religious teaching substantially repressive. Men looking for a religious reference to cover their fears and sometimes they materialize episodes and precise characters , so that each story could be more credible; Religion in general is a human weakness and various Longinus, Cain, Mary Magdalene, etc. are paper handkerchiefs to dry the tears of fear of man

4. When I checked tracklist for the first time, I’ve noticed that every song has own representative. Could you please make it clear for me and the readers? From my view, the best will be to write a short description for each of songs…

We have one main concept in the album and every song title is connected because they tell stories about biblical persons and focus on their fault, so on the Cd tracklist you could read the title and into brackets the name of the character to that the lyrics talks about.
A song named “The Bastard Son of Satan” talks about Jesus Christ life and his supposable acts, but actually we thing that false messiah for once again has been created by Catholic religion only to manipulate its disciples in front of a super-human, but ridiculous man.
„Servus Servorum Satanae“ talks about the current pope Benedictus XVI, an old sick man ,chief on a sectarian repressive movements called Catholicism...
Simon Peter betrayed Christ for three times… Mary Magdaleine was a slut… Caius Longinus was the soldier who killed Christ on the cross and Pontius Pilate was the man who condemned the messiah to death… and this is the only one truth in the bible.

5. What is deeply in your mind when you’re making the texts against Christianity? I mean, it should be interesting, because Italy is strongly based right on Christianity etc… Did you ever have any problems regarding your position or texts?

Nefarium mainly speak about religion in their albums, focusing on those Catholic episodes that influence everyday’s life like pedophilia or psychological attempts to fragile society.

We live in a country where Catholicism is everywhere and the Vatican has a massive control over schools, media, work and music of course, so who could better know the worst side of this religion, than the people that live in foreign country. Since we were very young and even at school, the education about religion gave us the opportunity to study the bible and we feel lucky because If you want to be against something, you have to know every details about it; with Ad Discipulum, we simply created a statement against the church and Jesus Christ words through priests speeches and Vatican prayers.

Nefarium apperead many times in italians newspapers in sections talking about satanic sects and we already had some police‘s visits because we usually bring on stage human skulls and i guess someone wanted to know who was the owner of that head before to become an item fot microphone stand...eh eh eh...

We also had some problems in Polony where the first version of our previous “Haeretichristus” inlay cd was banned and the printing phase was delayed.
We had to change a crucified catholic god of pig head with the simplier Nefarium logo...

anyway images in Ad Discipulum inlay will be even stronger as the tracklist : Servus Servorum Satanae ( Benedictus XVI) or The Bastard son of Satan (Jesus Christ)…etc…

6. Let’s stay in Italy. I’ve attended your country one year ago and searched for some concerts, shops, flyers etc. that support black metal and found almost nothing. So how about black metal in Italy generally & and the scene itself?

We live on alps, really close to France and we probably feel better french influences under many point of views, anyway the difficulties and the lack of support for the metal scene in our country, dont' helped Nefarium to develop their music.
Extreme music here, is not much listened even if many small bands born to propose old style Black Metal without good results.
The local bands are poorly supported and the organisers are often not up to; through the experience of our last Europen tour with Dark Funeral we can say that the Italian musical culture of the style that we are proposing is not good except for a few realities.

Anyway we like the music of Hour of Penance, a professional band from the south of Italy that propose strong death metal in Behemoth Style.

7. Did you notice the big boom of Latin texts in black metal during the last years? I study Latin so I can’t miss all the mistakes that groups often do. The translations, experiments in words, it’s mostly horrible! But I saw NEFARIUM started to use Latin as well, but you’re the exception that don’t make faults. So what is your opinion about this beautiful language? Did you study it or something?

Nefarium is a latin word that menas „Delict“.
We are Italian and we probably have more rights to speak in latin in front of Scandinavian bands…eh eh!
Our current language is rooted in latin and we probably easily learn that language.
I’ve personally studied latin for 5 years at school, I’m still studying the holy bible and we decided to use it in Nefarium lyrics because is very solemn and it has connections with Catholic religion and Ecclesiastic speeches.

8. Chaq Mol from Dark Funeral and Infaustus from Setherial helped you on previous release called “Haeretichristus” and as I saw, on novelty helped you Archaon from 1349. What could you tell us about the cooperation? How it was born? And how it was in the past? Are you the one that tells the musicians or the musicians asked NEFARIUM?

The choice to call to participate these guest members in the recordings of "Ad Discipulum" and before in „Haeretichristus“has honored ourselves and has tried to bring conceptually Nefarium closer to those bands that contributed to the development of the extreme metal scene.

When we recorded the new album we were just looking for good musicians in bands that we support since a longtime. Archaon guitar’s solos gave to Nefarium’s new album a good “trash metal” touch, the norwegian guitarist appreciated our work and from there was born a good relationship that led us to cooperate in Ad Discipulum records.

Anyway we personally know all the foreigner guests who played in our album and we can consider them good friend.

We share the stage in Paris with Setherial and we spent good time with Infaustus in french underground catacombs and we’re just back from a 42 gigs tour with Dark Funeral, Chaq Mol is a really kind person and we‘d like to thanks him for the support he always gave to Nefarium.

9. “Ad Discipulum” is going to be released under the wings of Agonia Records. I’ve done a lot of interviews with groups under Agonia and they had many problems with them in the past. So what is your opinion? Are you satisfied with their work?

Agonia is honestly working well with Nefarium, and on our part we try to cooperate in promotional phase, The current label staff is helping us a lot and shows every day more professionalism, we are very satisfied to have taken this path and we are confident for the future. Ad Discipulum will be produced in digipack version and it will be distributed throughout Europe, USA and Japan by major agencies, this important of us because we’d like to spread our music and our message the best possible. I don’t know how was the collaboration between Agonia Records and other bands, but I can tell we currently don’t take care about money and commercial music side and this help Nefarium to easily work with label and booking agencies in general.

10. I saw NEFARIUM few weeks back at Zlin during your tour with Dark Funeral and I have to say, I was disappointed… Not from your show, but from the sound. Because of it, I can’t recognize some of the songs from “Haeretichristus”. So let me ask about the tour at other stops? How the tour went? Any special memories, hehe?

It’s undoubtedly hard to play live a so fast black metal like Nefarium’s, and even if we usually rehearse a lot, in some venues the sound on stage is so lousy that it’s almost impossible to play.
We are sorry for the crowd that pay to watch the show and can’t even understand which song we’re playing, but it not depends on us and we assure we always to do the best for our fans, anyway a good show depends on the sounds that technicians could set and most part of times we could luckily offer a good performance.
The experience with Dark Funeral has been really good, we played in good venues through Europe and the crowd seemed to appreciate Nefarium’s concerts showing good support during our exhibitions and also after the show.
We invite to take a look to "www.myspace.com/nefarium" to check some live show photos...

11. You have not been in Czech Republic for the first time, so do you like our country?

We are just back from 42 live dates, and we’re pretty scared to talk about concerts, but we feel good when we are on stage spreading rage and aggression, so we just need few times to get more energy, then we could start to play live again. We like to play in Czech Republic, there’s a good crowd and really beautiful girls there! I remember a good experience at Dunkelheit Festival in 2009, a good festival really well organized, we will surely play again in your country.

12. We’re at the end of the interview. I would like to say THANK YOU for the time you’ve spent with my questions and thanks for the new album. It’s nice to see group that makes music sincerely, without any pose.

We would like to underline the importance of people like you who support the Black Metal, through areas devoted to Bands of popularity or indifferent talent.

We invite all those who love Black Metal to listen Nefarium, trying to grab our message in its clearest expression of anger and hatred.
