Interview with Lantlôs (Classic interviews)


1. Lantlôs started in 2005, what was the first impulse to make a group like this (I mean with urban and modernity themes)? Did you feel that Lantlôs will be right reflection of your mind?

To shorten this up: When I was 17 my perception completely shifted. Everything I percept is kind of blurry and "filtered". It is as if you were watching a movie. You don't have control about anything. It is as if you were not going the same ground as others. I feel surreal. Not in a supereor sense, but just that my relation to reality is wrong. the outlying impacts descend into a blurry substance that isn't even existing. Everything that exists is within yourself, because you only can eperience via yourself. There is no consens. I guess you won't get an idea about what I am talking about. And it is very hard to explain it to you, because it is something very special. But you can imagine it as a constant feeling of having a flush. This is extremely complicated to cope with. Because everything changes. Everything is grey, there are no contrasts, no good, no bad. No happiness no sorrow. Just grey. And escapes. And at that time I didn't knew how to cope with it, because it was a drastic change of my whole life. Music was always important to me, if not the most important thing. But I was too much of a coward to admit my state of mind and I didn't feel that people would understand. Waht I want to say is, that all these themes of urbanity and modernity were just hooks - I was trying to show people how I feel. And when I was in the the city the feeling got stronger to me, this is why I chose these themes. But it was interprated wrongly very often, as being social critic. So, to be honest, I was just very young and didn't know how to express myself and this si why the first Lantlôs album was embedded into the whole urban, modern stuff.

2. Anyway, maybe usual question for you, but what is the meaning of the name “Lantlôs”? And how did you choose it?

The word Lantlôs is middlehighgerman and means something like "homeless" or "Having no home"

3. I did not hear your first demo, but I exactly remember when I listened to your debut album for the first time. It was in Germany, Bad Neustadt during the winter 2008 (in December I think). These memories are my first regarding your debut album so let me ask you, if I’ll tell you name of your first album, what will you imagine first; any memories, interesting topics?

Yes, I indeed have ideas in mind and that's an interesting question. I remember about me being very ambitioned and enthusiastic about the first release. We had quite long studio sessions - I think one was about 14 hours and the sun was already rising when we left the studio, that was filled with smoke and a very certain atmosphere. I also have to think about Angrrau and how we parted our ways and how good friends we were. And I see now, that I was a different person back then. There were lots of things I was enthusiastic about that mean nothing to me now. There's so much I can remember but basically it's all within the debut. I think also moments and atmospheres in the studio have an imprint on the songs. The debut reminds me of a period of my life, when a lot of things were fresh and new to me and I especially relate very intimate moments and experiences of friendship with it. Far too much to tell about all.

4. My personal opinion is that “Lantlôs” was an album where you searching your own way of interpretation. It’s more about black metal than “.neon”, but some songs are pretty colorful and emotive. Please let me ask you what was the main idea behind “Lantlôs” album? I’m not quite good in German to read through the lyrics, hehe. But anyway, there was definitely an idea that listener can’t catch…

As I told before - I was very enthusiastic at these times and didn't know how to cope with my perception problem. I was also very romantic and melancholic and always hoped for a good end. So, the first album is for me something very fresh, young and exploring. As you said, we were searching for our identity. It definitly has some positive and yearning vibe to the songs. Of course there are crushing moments, but they are rather beautiful or melancholic than crushing, because otherwise it just woudn't have been us. There was never an intellectual idea or concept or something huge behind Lantlôs. It is just music that is coming from our souls. And I never told anything about the lyrics from the debut, which won't change now. I just don't feel like giving an overview for the lyrics of this album.


5. Let’s talk about “.neon” now. How do you feel before the release date?

Well, haha, it took me so long to answer, that it is already out. Sorry for that. It didn't feel too special, because .neon is such an old album to me. But of course I was curious for what people will say. I'm always curious for that. Now, after the release, I'm very satisfied with it! Especially with the vinyl - it's a pearl!

6. “.neon” is not a work of you only, because you worked together with Neige (Alcest). When, how and why the cooperation was born? Did you feel the album needs Neige’s sensitivity and artistry?

I met Neige quite by chance to be honest. When the Amesoeurs 10” was coming out, we were finishing our first album, if I remember correctly. And of course we were in need for an artwork. So I got this EP and I really liked the artwork, because it was exactly the kind of what I was looking for. So I just checked for the URL that was printed on the rear, without knowing who I was contacting. It turned out to be Fursy. I Didn't even know that Fursy was playing in Amesoeurs and about his close relationship to Neige. However, he liked the album, did a fantastic artwork and showed it to Neige. Via several mails we somehow found our way together. That's basically it. In some points we are very similar, especially when it comes to emotions and things we have experienced in our lifes. To be honest, I've never met someone who was actually understanding my music as good he does. He's perfect for Lantlôs, because he understands what Lantlôs is about and he can stay within the theme and be creative at the same time without annoying me.

7. Neige did definitely great job, that’s my opinion. How complicated the cooperation was? You live kilometers far from each other… How long the recording took?

I don't know how long the recording was, but we weren't recording in the same studio. It wasn't complicated - I just trusted him for what he'll do and it turned out to be right. We will record our next album in July together in Bielefeld, Germany. I'm so much looking forward to this album and to the session. Will be great!

8. The music is quite different than on “Lantlôs”. Was that a natural step forward or directed step (in the vein that you wanted to do something different)?

hum, I don't really know. On the one hand it was natural, because as I stated, I have developed musically and personally. But I also hate to make the same stuff always.

9. For me, the biggest difference is in the structure. The songs are more variable, the vocals are fantastic (mostly an inosculation of harsh and clean vocals of Neige) and the sound is more dynamic. Is that a way you want to follow in the future? If yes, why?

No, the new Lantlôs material sounds a lot different than the old one. It also a bigger change than lantlôs - .neon. I don't want to say too much about the new meterial, but the songs are by far longer and hypnotic. The whole album is feeding on you. It is abstract, surreal and ugly. The structures are very blurred and it is an exhausting album. But I think these prognoses are always futile, because in the end noone gets a proper imagination about the stuff. Lets just stay with that it is really different and that it is not really comparable to the former stuff.


10. Could you please tell me the connection between artwork and lyrics? Fursy did a brilliant job, without any doubt, as usual. So if I’ll take the album as a listener in a shop, what the artwork, names of the songs and lyrics should tell me about the concept and idea?

It is a man torn apart by various arms and a woman. The man symbolizes the inner core. The arms and the woman are outlying impacts to the soul. Whereas the outlying impacts torture the man, the woman symbolizes the impacts that are getting closer to the core. It is again related to a blurred perception of reality. The core is floating in some bleak and blurry, abstract surrounding and just feels emotions and impacts on his soul. This perfectly goes along with the main theme of .neon - depression, depersonalisation, greyness, love, toture and surreality. Fursy is really a great man you know? I never told him what I wanted to have and he also didn't have the lyrics when he did the paintings. He's so extremely good in grasping atmospheres and visualizing them, it's insane! I'm so happy with the artwork! The question how it is related to the rest is hard to answer, because it is simply so much going along that you can almost find everything in the lyrics within the artwork. I mean there's for example also pictures for each lyric. Music, lyrics and artwork are totally working together and enhancing each other, if you think about it and look closer. You'll see.

11. My last question; what is your dream to do with Lantlôs in upcoming years? Maybe you did not think about it, but I’m quite sure you have some special dreams…

I want to have a tour! That is my dream for ages. Since I am like 6-7 years old I want to tour, so this is definitly a dream. But that's actually it, because I don't think too far in the future.
