1. Hi! Already some days Kainsmal pilgrims about counters, what responses did you get from loyal listeners?
Mostly it happens, that band by return find some moments, which she would want do better, it is your case?
Cheers. As far as I can judge from the few weeks the album is out by now, responses are again something in between good and overwhelming. I receive mails by people telling me how much and why they love the album, almost daily. Reviews so far are nothing but positive – nothing to moan about that is. We wouldn’t be recording artists if there was nothing we wanted to do better, it’s the same with each album. Also on „Kainsmal“ there are some details, especially in the production I would revise and improve if we were still in stages of production. As we’re not it sounds like it sounds and it’s fine like that. There’s always a next time to be better.
2. What you would, as person who was at both albums, find the bigger difference between „Patina“ and „Kainsmal“? About what „Kainsmal“ deals? Is it compact story or most of songs have only united theme?
„Kainsmal“ is something like a concept album, but GEIST itself is also a kind of concept band. All our albums will always carry the spirit with themselves that the band and its creative parts carry and radiate. Every lyric deals with a certain aspect of this spirit, like solitude, loss, end and begin, cycles, certain mystic in nature and much more. The song and title „Kainsmal“ says something like a special kind of people are more sensitive for the way the world turns, and that mankind bears a sign, a burden (the „Kainsmal“) as a curse for their deeds and sins. Just like in the bible, where Kain receives the sign showing that he had killed his brother and should not be touched nor killed.
Compared to the debut album, „Kainsmal“ is much more compact and aggressive, less melancholic – or maybe more melancholic in a subtle way. It’s shorter, has a clearer, more transparent and pounding production, its artwork is worlds more better than the one of „Patina“. Concerning the songs we have straigher material this time, also as an result of Aínvar not being part of the band anymore.
3. A lot of bands departs to extension date between albums, various splits, EP, etc. ... At Geist it is not that (which is from my angle only good), will you in the future continue only with full-value albums?
Releasing splits, eps or demos or even taking part on samplers is – at least more – nothing bad as long as you release quality material and not songs you consider not good enough for an album release. Just look at Lunar Aurora, they have did eps and split releases as well, and the material is excellent.
We’re a band that is creative, but not as creative as some individuals releasing one of album per year with three different bands. The songs we write in one period fit together, they belong to one period of the band’s life and should be recorded for one single release. We can’t write single songs that differ in style, production or line-up each time, only homogenous material. Still, we have thought about taking part on a label sampler one day, or record an ep or mini album. If we do so, also these songs will be of the same quality as all album songs and not worse. I don’t know what’s going to come the moment I write this.
4. After album „Patina“ you subscribe to excellent label Cold Dimensions, are you limited by contract only on „Kanismal“ or you look else?
GEIST is not limited to anything, only to quality. „Kainsmal“ is the first album released on Cold Dimensions, and if the label does good work and is satisfied with the sales and the band personally, I guess we will continue the cooperation. Still there is always space for improvement – Solistitium did a really good job for „Patina“ and still we switched labels, just do improve and get more opportunities of doing even better releases. It may be the same with the coming album, but I guess it won’t. Cold Dimensions is, besides Ván, the label with the highest quality black metal music in Germany, we had no problems at all until now and I’m pretty sure we’ll stay.
5. Anybody could be sorry of shorter playing time against the debut, how you perceive it? From my angle is music Geist more then diverse and I wouldn’t scold for some additional minute :)...
That’s shit. We had experiments like „Thanatos Phobein“ that nearly nobody liked, and almost endless loops on „Patina“, if you’d cut these parts out of the album „Patina“ has the same playing time like „Kainsmal“. This album is so compact and full of good riffs that nobody can complain. Better we do seven extremely good songs with 40 minutes duration than four mediocre ones extra, just to reach the full hour. Some of the best albums ever haven’t been much longer than half an hour, and that’s because these bands have always sorted out all kind of lame filling and just left the diamonds. .
6. On the novelty are invited even two guest, first of them is Aran and second Martin Wiese... Both have on album relatively important work and without them it would not be that, how was beared this cooperation? Can we count with using keyboards in the future?
They’re not really guests in the classic way. Aran did some work for the layout of the album and contributed some seconds of ambient material. Martin Wiese, by the way the owner of the studio we recorded in, played the keyboards. I could have played them as well (I had composed the parts before), but he’s worlds and worlds better and faster with that (learns and plays the piano for 20 years). It was easiest to let him play the parts. So, without the intention to underrate the work of these two fantastic musicians: I guess the album could be quite alike even without Martin, but wouldn’t look like that without Aran.
To be honest, I don’t love to rely on session musicians too much and I dislike the idea they do too much compositional work for our albums. If you’re playing in a band and like to record albums you should be able to play what you have written, that’s my opinion. Yes, probably we’ll use keyboards in the future, but not in a much greater amount than on the two albums.
7. I’m relatively abroad of moods, which radiate from album: once I think it is more cheerful, next time more gloomy... Of course I would take up sound, which gives to all instruments perfectly excel, but will you inscribe me how you wants appeal on listeners; press in them specific mood to head...?
The album does have a broader range of moods, that’s true. At least compared to the average black metal album that is considered to be black, black and black all the time – which, in most cases, is extremely boring to me. To express certain themes it’s necessary to use more positive atmospheres, even if it’s only to contrast them with even more gloomy parts. On „Kainsmal“, in some songs, I used the more „cheerful“ riffs to underline the lyrics, with reach their saddest heights when the music sounds most positive – and also vice versa. It’s some artistic method to state how important a part is; I tried that for the first time and it’s really interesting. I’m pretty sure that a listener who listens carefully to the music for a couple of times may feel the same like we did when we composed the songs. So, it’s not necessary to press anybody in any specific mood.
8. You are leading person of band, will you agree? I want task you, how you would define your music to innocent listener...? I ask you purposely, because variety of songs – influences in them is big...
I agree.
GEIST mainly sounds like black metal, but does not have the classic black metal intentions like being satanic, extreme or bloody and none of the pathetic pagan nonsense, like praying to Odin, fighting glorious battles and all that shit. We’re trying to express very personal, thoughtful feelings, also positive feelings that is, about general questions of philosophy, theology or anthropology, like being alone, bearing losses, hoping for new beginnings, feelings of decay. On the musical side we’re more bound to the traditions of black metal, carrying the music of our youth with us (like Ulver, Borknagar, Lunar Aurora, Enslaved and much more), that’s always an inspiration. Still, we use plenty of interesting keyboard layers, ambient and electronic parts, acoustic guitars and samples to get the atmosphere the song needs. I guess we’ve managed to sound like GEIST, not like Norwegian, Swedish, German or whatever kind of black metal – just like a band with an own way of expression.
9. A little of that foretime... but not so far yer... Why it come to mass leave from Eismalsott and displace to Geist? Well debut was recorded still under Eismalsott, eh?
Ah, when does this end. Yes, we recorded „Patina“ for EISMALSOTT back then. Shortly after the recording, Aínvar began to study far away from us, we didn’t have time to rehearse or even to meet, and no chance to play gigs that is. So we had to take a decision for the future. Aínvar continued with EISMALSOTT alone (as far as I know it’s laid on ice now), the rest of us, with a new guitarist, founded GEIST and released the album under that band name. That’s practically all. We had some minor struggles, like it’s always the case when things depart, but everything’s alright now.
10. Except your incidence in Geist you play too in other bands, where you overmaster even drums, do you like more singing or playing drums? Though from view of that live presentation...
At first, in ENID I only play guitars and bass; in GEIST only guitar, with some speech performances on „Kainsmal“, but not the main vocals!
The third band then is FUNERAL PROCESSION, and the state within there is a little more complicated. In fact Marlek, the drummer of GEIST, recorded the drums for the last funeral procession releases, I recorded guitars, bass and keyboards. Live I played bass. Marlek left the band due to timing problems, and we needed a new drummer. I forwarded the bass to a guy who’s interested to play, bought a drumkit and started to learn. That’s actually the situation, I learn playing drums and we’ll start rehearsing at the end of the year. As for the live presentation – I haven’t performed something different than guitar or bass so far, so... no idea. Each instrument is interesting, but also different when you perform it live on gigs. I can imagine it will be striking to perform drums live for the first time, but we’ll see. It still needs a lot time until then.
11. What you recently listens, if we pass away „Kainsmal“? What you most attend when you listen black metal music?
At the moment I listen to a swedish avantgarde metal band called MACHINAE SUPREMACY. They did brilliant music with metal instruments and the SID soundchip of the old C64 home computer, no idea if you know that one. During the last weeks I have been very nostalgic when it comes to music, listening to a lot of old stuff like that C64 music, old SEPULTURA and things like that. Also, the new albums by SONIC REIGN from Germany, PLACEBO and MUSE are excellent.
Apart from that I regularly write reviews for metal.de, they always send me a big bunch of stuff to listen to – that means I don’t have too much time to listen to music just for my pleasure.
What I like best with black metal music is haunting and memorable riffs and melodies, good vocals, raw and powerful production and first of all honesty and content... most bands, in Germany and all over the world, seem to forget that this is most important when playing dark music. Or music in general that is.
12. How you watch at German metal spawn? In compliance with my opinion it very expands, but i think nowadays every clown can establish black metal band and record shit... Though you can give us some tip on quality and less known local band...
In general you’re right with the clowns. On the other hand – as a music with intelligence and taste you should find out very quickly which bands are good and which you shouldn’t support. I’d say 90% of all German black metal bands are something between brainless political shit (I hate that NSBM stuff sooo much...) and useless average stuff. Some bands I expect quality music in the future (even if the did record more mediocre music in the past) are WEIRD FATE, TODTGELICHTER, SONIC REIGN (sound like a German version of newer SATYRICON), ATRAS CINERIS and of course FUNERAL PROCESSION, GRAUPEL, NIHIL NOCTURNE or HELRUNAR. There are lot of established excellent bands, like KATHARSIS, LUNAR AURORA, SECRETS OF THE MOON and some more, you should check them out. Avoid Christhunt Productions, by the way.
13. Do you know some band from Czech Republic? Have you sometimes visited our country?
I know the classical old bands from Czech Republic, like MASTER’S HAMMER and MANIAC BUTCHER, and DARK STORM by name. That’s practically all. To be honest I never liked their way of expression too much, no idea why. At least it doesn’t have to do anything with their homecountry. I’ve never been to Czech Republic rely, just near to it when I visited the Ore Mountains – but a friend of mine told me it’s a beautiful country with a lot of nature.
14. Have you leaved about emotions in life, or you are conducted by instinct in complicated situations?
A mixture of both. I’m a very emotional person, but in some situations I manage to leave that besides and be rational and analyzing. That’s something you can learn with a few years of time. Of course you’ll always be the person you are, but control is something I appreciate very much and like to achieve when it’s possible. The situations I let my instinct lead me are something I shouldn’t talk about in interviews, hehe.
15. Have you in love Mother Nature? If yes, so how you look up on growing „industry“? Can you imagine, that your childrens would looks on naked moon scenerys and they can’t draw not a bit of that spiritual power, which nature hides in them?
I like and appreciate nature very much, but not as much as some friends of mine do, for example. Industry is not my cup of tea, though I’m a child of our modern industrial scenery and society. Honestly, who doesn’t use the internet, computers, cars, buys in the supermarket and all that stuff?! That would be impossible with any industry. What I strongly dislike is raiding natural ressources with greed or without caring (wasting drinking water), or losing respect of nature (for example killing insects or animals without need, wasting oil or gas etc.) That’s something only mankind does, one reason to hate it.
The earth will be cleaned from anything that’s now living on it one day, that’s for sure. Mankind just speeds up its own death and the one of all organic life on this planet. Still I’m pretty sure my children won’t live on a totally dead planet, there’s luckily still much nature and much inspiration (even without nature) left.
16. There was a world championship some time ago in Germany, are you a friend of sport? Did you perceive how your team come out or it comes outside you?
Generally I’m no big friend of sports in general, I do some here and now, but more for the fun of it.
Still, I liked the atmosphere we had in the country during the championship... I met with friends, drank cold beer and had some nice food, and that’s what most people did. Just having a good time, with nice wetter and nice people. Soccer was only the opportunity to do that. Apart from that I read that other nations have been positively surprised by us Germans – that’s really funny. They should have visited an NSBM gig. Honestly, it was a great event all in all, I don’t care about what the German team reached or not. I like a good match if I watch football, it’s good to see if our national team wins, but if not... hey, think European.
17. It is all from my side, probably interwiev doesn’t bored you , and you can send word to our readers for close... For myself I wish Geist as few as possible of problems inside band and much of quality published music material...
Yes, thanks for the wishes and the interview. I don’t like the famous last words, so bye...
