Interview with Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult (Classic interviews)

1. Greets in Germany in this mild winter! How do you do? What´s up in the band now and what are your plans in the future?

Slaughtercult main focus at the moment is to enforce „Hora Nocturna“‘s riualistic malice upon stages through out Europe. More bloodstained live battle dates are currently negoiated. Plans for the near future is the vinyl version of the current 4th chapter, as well as a generous offer to release picture LPs of the entire D. N. Slaughtercult back catalogue.

2. Well, how are you satisfied with „Hora Nocturna“? I must say, that you have reason for it, it´s quality work! What about responses from outside (reviews, fans…)?

We are very satisfied with the latest output. The responses have also been very good. Unfortunately there are many self proclaimed writers, who all of a sudden must write a statement concerning our releases. Even though they obviously have no understanding of Black Metal they feel the need to write something about it. Oh well, the worst critic has still been „above average“. Those worshipping old school, scandinavian black metal will definitely not be disappointed! Slaughtercult stands for own satanic, nihilistic and misantrophic believes. Slaughtercult stands for pure fucking black metal. And that is exactly what we think „Hora Nocturna“ is.

3. Each album did you release selves, how so? I don´t think, that there is not label, which isn´t interested in your music…

Our decision to stay independed is not due to lack of label interest. As a matter of fact there have been numerous contract offers reaching us from nearly every continent. The point is nowadays ANY band is able to get a contract! There is nothing special about it anymore. Good bands as well as lousy bands get signed. Slaughtercult has been alive for 10 years now. With every release, with every concert, the demand for our releases has grown. After approximatly six years we got fucking tired of taking care of everything ourselves. Since the third chapter „Nocturnal March“ we are relying on two major labels to help us with distribution. Thus, we do have „distribution contracts“, which means we are still self financed as well as produced. We decide what is released, when it is released, and in which quantity. Our „business partners“ simply help us by doing most of the „sellings“. An excellent choice for us to focus on more important matters – such as spiritual ascendance!

4. It´s pleasant, that you can slow down, form unexpected moments and grant hearer to listen to album, which is full of atmosphere. Do you rate „Hora Norcturna“ as most rounded creation of the band? Where do you search differences?

Well, the only all guns blazing release is „Follow the Calls for Battle“. Back then, the lineup was reduced to just vocals and guitars. So, most of the drumming resulted in straigh forward blast beats. With a full line up we were able to work on new material with every instrument present during the process of composing. Obviously there are minor differences from album to album, but most important is that you can easily recognize Slaughtercult on every release. „The Pest Called Humanity“ is our first chapter. The included five tracks are probably more „Old school“ due to less experience. The aforementioned sophomore release „Follow...“ is rawer due to lack of a drummer. The third chapter „Nocturnal March“ as well „Hora Nocturna“ are similar in sound and riffing. The sound differs greatly from the previous chapters. Still raw and unpure but more of „controlled“ chaos. As you have mentioned there is more variaty in tempo and atmosphere. At the moment the current album is our „most round creation“. However, as stated on every album „the slaughter will continue“... we shall see what new material will bring...

5. Who is the autor of your lyrics? Does Onielar create all, or do also other members take „lyric space“? Your lyrics handle about very classic themes for black metal: satanism, nihilism, and so on. Do you still find inspiration it that ideal views? Don´t you think about other themes? In some lyrics we can hear German, but always is completed with English. It´s English for you the best form of expression?

Since Onielar is vociferating Slaughtercults scrolls of lyrical wisdom she has the final word on which lyrics are used and which are reduced to ember. The creative genius within our ranks concerning the lyrics are Onielar as well as Velnias. Musicwise, it is also Onielar and Velnias who create the basic structures. However, the msucial ideas are then carefully mold by all members. As a general topic our inspirations are deeply rooted within the Occult. The Occult has many forms, thus the spectrum of possibilites is nearly endless. Basically you can say everything which is able to mesmerize the „I“ can be used to draw new inspirations from. „A blessed drop discerped from the spirit,“ from there on a new „thought“ is born. Nourish this thought to gain more wisdom. More wisdom inevitably means new inspirations. There are multiple languages used within Slaughtercults lyrics. German, English as well as Latin and Polish. Some words and phrases are a result of utmost deep thought patterns. When ever a mere human tongue fails to express such a feeling or thought neologisms are used.

6. In DNS themes often appears word „blasphemy“. How do you approach to it? Where is in your opinion border between blasphemy and delict? And is that act of protest in this time necessary?

Slaughtercult expresses our own world visions. „Blasphemy“ in general is used to describe a certain disgust of manmade religions. We do not bow down before any man made god. Not „Zebaoth“ and also not „Satan“. We are our own masters, and like every „seeing self crowned individual“ our own deity. We do not have to justify our doings to anyone but ourselves. We are no guiding shepherd! If someone is offended by our „state of mind“, our statements, or simply our way of live... so what!? We are not releasing „music“ to protest. There are better and more efficient ways to fight against the opposing forces in your every day life. If you take the „word“ blasphemy to another level, you can easily see that the word is no longer just associated with „religion“.

7. What about DNS and originality? What things, do you think, that your band is better than others in? What unique can you propose to hearers?

It is not our intention to pursue absolute originality or uniqueness. It is not the modern interpretations of extreme music which suits our musical taste. However, this is probably already something unique nowadays, as many bands try too hard to go new ways. „All“ we can offer is old school black metal executed with a dedicated blackened heart, utmost conviction and an awakened spiritual ascendance.

8. How does work cooperation with Onielar? Does she live still in Poland?

All four of us are living in Germany, thus „work“ is not a problem at all. Merely minor details are marring the splendour of a perfect cooperation. These issues, however, are completely the opposite of noteworthy.

9. Who is the author of covers of albums? It appeals to me relatively compact impression.

All album covers are of such renown artists as G. Doré or A. Dürer. Their talent to express medieval tragedies offers a huge variety to interpret their depicted art. Slight changes here and there invert the original intention to create a whole new fully experienced visualization. As Slaughtercult has not changed their allegiance as well as musical style during the past 10 years there is also no need to change the visualizations.

10. How do you remember on your arrival to band? Did you seek just from beginning to play „pure black metal“ or it came by itself? Do you seek to sound according to beforehand alignment aim or you play, how it comes on your mind?

Prior to Slaughtercult’s dawn, it was already a known fact that a conspiracy for utmost raw, occult black metal is what we wanted to achieve. It was not our aim to specifically sound like any other band. It was merely out intention to uphold the glistering torch of old school black metal. After each any every album you are looking back at what you have composed and ask yourself „how the fuck did we do that?“. Which means not more than „it comes by itself“.

11. What about you and image? Is it important for you? Is it natural product of music, or just anything „higher“?

As a matter of fact we have always been our true selves. Every album, every interview reflects our personal way of life. A fact which many people can not comprehend. That is exactly the problem. Which show our real selfs and ordinary people turn away in disgust. Actually that is the way extreme musical art should be. Too many bands have shallow minds behind their music. Few know that there is more to music, even fewer can sense this spirit embedded within soundscapes. And even less can actually follow the lyrical paths provided by „individual scrolls of wisdom“. Dumb bleating sheep need a guiding shepherd. Slaughtercult walks upon the narrow path a far mankinds well tread out road. Screw „image“ – be your self, be loyal to your self and those a like and no one else! There is no fame and fortune within true extreme music!

12. Live performances…How often do you play, what place was the most bizarre and wherefrom did you bring the most positive memories? Are you man, who permit with stagefright, or not?

Live performances should be renamed in bloodstained live battles! Our first performance was five years ago! Since then D. N. Slaughtercult has accomplished approximately 40 to 50 gigs. Each and every event resembles something memorable. Positive or negative does not matter. There is something you can learn from any of these experiences. Stagefright is actually something important. It cleary shows that you as the performer take what you would like to „perform“ very serious. „Stagefright“ means that you care about the outcome of the performance. This feeling is present before any gig, may it be a small venue with a handful of visitors, or performing at a festival with thousands of people in the audience. As long as you have found a proper way of dealing with stagefright it does not emody a real problem.

13. What about your favourite groups, which of them brought you to play on guitar? What that instrument means for you, do you play any other styles than black metal?

Certainly all of us meet at a certain point with bands like Slayer, Venom, KAT, Sodom, Kreator and several 80ies heavy metal bands. A some stage during our life their releases probably inspired us to take up an instrument. Concerning Slaughtercults tracks it is mostly scandinavian black metal in the veins of early Immortal, Ancient, Ulver, Emperor, Kvist, Enslaved, etc. which suits our style the most. Of course you are not just focusing on one style as a „musician“ – however, it is another thing to let such „styles“ flow into your music. Old school black metal is old school black metal. We do not need any fancy experiments. We take one step at a time – if we feel that the music needs something else we will gradually work our way towards this improvement.

14. In this time is modern to invite on album many guests. Do you plan something similar? Did you somethimes think about that, whom would you invite (without limitation), if you could?

All „idols“ of the past have fallen. They turned their back on what they previously stood for. A big illusion - not more! Why would you need any guests!? If you can not do something yourself on album then simply forget about it. Buying an album means supporting the band and no incest all star product!

15. Not long ago you stayed on the same platform as Czech Inferno. Do you have any favourite interpretes in Czech Republic? And which German bands could you recommend?

Actually we shared a stage with Inferno more than once. The first time with Besatt from Poland. We are no longer recommending any of the so called scenes. It is just a foul reeking swamp of ass kissing. There are definitely good bands in Germany, the Czech Republic and anywhere else in the world. But those truely good bands will make their way wihtout any „help“ from the outside. If they want to be known they will succeed!

16. Thanks for interview and let your black star still raise. Last words are yours.
