Interview with Urna (Classic interviews)

1. It´s practically impossible to learn something about Urna, so I must ask you (though I don´t like this question) on history of band and on some personal perceptions.

Urna formed up in 2004 due to a split of a previous project involving other members, at the beginning the goal was to play old school Black Metal, the first compositions of the band went in this direction but soon after we decided to work for the creation of an original sound that could be coherent with the lyrics that Rm was developing. So we decided to merge every possible influence in our music and the the result was our first ep Mors Imperatrix Mundi where Funeral Doom and Ambient stuff came togheter with our Black Metal background. We think that is possible to combine some different influences in a solid and unique sound... so here we are with our last work „Sepulcrum“ where all those influences are involved to create a particular mixture of all these different genre... At now there aren’t too bands that do the same... many bands convolve inside their sound some elements from Electro music or Doom... but they don’t do the same like us... For exemple Spektre sounds like a Black Metal act with electronics inside their sound... but they are a Black Metal band, the same is for acts like Haemoth or BlackLodge or others inside the doom scene like Reido or Celestiial. Only bands like Xasthur or Lurker Of Chalice or again Funeral Mourning had released a particular mixture of all those elements in an unique work and all those bands are now like master of the new „funeral black metal“ scene.

2. Style, you present on „Sepulcrum“ is somethimes similar with the last album of Blut aus Nord or Spektr. You move behind some borders of black metal and you create your certain „undergenre“. Which influences are by Urna mostly attendant? Doom, black metal or ambient? Why you create just that music not classic black metal?

Urna is a changing creature, there isn’t a specific stylistic line to follow , our duty is to perform de/ op-pressive and loud music and to get this we take advantage from every possible source of inspiration. We decided to play in this way our natural goal is to experiment new styles starting with a base of black metal. I think music needs to be renewed to survive from the passing of time, i appreciate ’90 Darkthrone but i don’t like bands that in 2007 plays like them in Transylvanian Hunger, i prefer to hear the original one and not stupid clones. Is thruly that we appreciate acts like Blut Aus Nord (for works like „Ultima Thule“ or „Memoria Vetusta“) or Spektr... but is true that with Urna we don’t want play only Black Metal as some bands do today... We listen for some stuff in all those three kinds of music and is ridicolous to reduct our creativity. This one is one of the motives ‚couse we’d create our second „project“ Locus Mortis

3. Could you transport by listening to „Justa Funebria“ to that time, which you recorded this album in? What are your feelings by return? What are you more skilled in, what are you different in? What is Urna different in?

In Justa Funebria we played songs that were composed for the previous Black Metal project that involved me and RM. The music is classic Black Metal with italian lyrics and some electronic stuff between the songs, the final track of the work is a 25 minutes of trippy ambient, since that period there was the will to experiment and realize something of different from the also called “Depressive BM“ that went on top these years. Justa Funebria is our first release and we have surely good memories for obvious reasons , but objectivly it‘ s a premature work with many mistakes.

4. It´s unique stroke to place on album cover of Beherit. Without questions it goes about pillar of black metal scene in Finland, maybe also round the world. I presume, that you have special tie to it. Is there any other band, which is worth to that mention?

We did Beherit cover because listening to the original we thought that could be a good experiment covering using doom tempos to enhance the ancestral feeling of the song and also because we consider Beherit as seminal in extreme music and we were proud to get tribute to them. About bands to be named, it’s a bit difficult to name them all, i could say ’90 scandinavian BM scene, Abigor and Summoning, the pioneers of Funeral Doom like Thergothon and Skepticism to name few..

5. Ambient places claim some ration of imaginativeness and of course patience. Resulting effect on „Sepulcrum“ appeals very destructively. How runs process of songs composition? How do you work with sound and particular songs? I think, that it could be more than interesting…

The songwriting has a rational side and a instinctive one, before everythingt i plan mentally a structure of the song and after i follow my irrational path improvising riffs over the chords then finally i add the electronic ambient between the parts.

6.If you so deep attend to deaths theme, will you often thought about that, what follow after life? Does just this obscurity magnetize you, or you find also other fascinations in it?

I can’t give you any answer ‚couse the themes inside Urna are a part of our personal path into the esoteric and ermetic existence of every thing. For this reason we’re not the right people to give you an answer. We’re magnetized by death as we’re magnetized by life... „As Above So Below“ ...

7. Does Urna attack on borders of human comprehension? Somethimes it evokes me snake, which is slowly and unobtrusively crawling and licking very bottom of human trusts…Is that your aim? How do you see your progress in the future?

Yours is an interesting point of view, some parts are very sinister and could evoke a crawling snake for their slow insidious developing. I think the music is subjective and every person can receive his personal feelings from it, our songs are a mirror of ourself and there is nothing of objective on it. We don’t know anything about future, life is chaos and so we act in the same way.

8. Do you play live performances with your bands? Or are all clearly studio business?

We don’t play live for many reasons, first we don’t like the metal mass, second we don’t have enough musicians to complete a line-up and we are’nt searching for and third Urna music is not conceived for a stand-up listening like a live set but the right condition to play Sepulcrum is turning the light of your room off, lying alone in your own bed and then wearing your headphones playing the cd on stereo.

9. Could you tell us, what MZ, RM and FM mean? Your pseudonyms…?

FM is a past member, now Urna are only me and RM , the pseudonyms are simply the initials of our names, we choose this way to name ourself because we don’t like childish warname and because we would keep the anonymous status at the same time.
