Interview with Nortt (Classic interviews)

1. Greets! In the beginning of interview please tell us, what is new about Nortt and, of course, how are you it these days?

I’m fine, thanks. Not much to tell. “Ligfærd” has recently been released in the US by Red Stream. And I’m halfway with the recording of the forthcoming full-length album. Otherwise things are rather calm, fortunately.

2. Your music take sign funeral/doom/black metal, which component is for you personally the nearest?

Black metal! The influence was mainly drawn from black metal. Doom metal merely contributed with the atmosphere and the pace.

3. Do albums titles always have continuity with songs, with lyrics, with you, Nortt? Or you strive to go on each creation bit other way – look into new corner? Do you contain more philosophic attitude by lyrics question?

I’ve always used intratextuality in my writings. It is a way to encapsulate the overall theme and connect the lyrics and the various recordings. As long as I create music, I will yearn to go beyond the previous work. It is the lyrics that possess the philosophy, so naturally lyrical questions will reveal more philosophical answers.

4. What treats „Ligfærd“ of? Where do you see its pro-and-con?

The atmosphere, the riffs and the arrangement is superior on “Ligfærd”. Taking into consideration that it is a somewhat monotonous genre, I managed to throw hooks in and thus sustain the listener’s interest. The production can still be improved but the darkened atmosphere clearly shines through.

5. „Ligfærd“ has in end longer concept than precursor „Gudsforladt“. Why it? Do you more like to create short or long songs or you attach only to emotions and resulting effect is that true?

With “Ligfærd” I didn’t follow a certain arrangement, as the length of each song was irrelevant. “Gudsforladt” was different because all the songs had to be compressed onto one LP, so the arrangement was forced to be very strict. In retrospect, I could have left a couple of songs out and thus reached a more varied album. On the other hand, I closed an important chapter with “Gudsforladt”, which cleared the path towards “Ligfærd”. Needless to say that I’ll never follow any restrictions during recording again.

6. How long you compose song? What do you more concentrate on? Is it atmosphere?

Atmosphere first of all and, as mentioned earlier, keeping the music interesting by constantly throwing hooks in. A lot of music that is repetitive and monotonous tends to become uninteresting after a short while. So I yearn to create monotonous- but not uninteresting songs.

7. What leaded (and still leads) you to that extreme music and lyric show?

It’s difficult to tell. I’m not particularly skilled in psychoanalysis. I have always been withdrawn and fond of solitude, so that is closely related to my misanthropic views. Furthermore, I always walked a different path than the common herd. And on the left hand path I explored unknown depths of existence. I’m just a dark soul by nature.

8. If we see on beginning of your creation and on the year 2006 (for example), we see, that Nortt deepens, is more dark and it points more and more to ambient. How do you personally see on your progress crossly time?

Until “Ligfærd”, different issues like equipment and studio time played a significant part of the end result and the progression was thereby, to some extent, out of my control. The initial vision of Nortt was first achieved with “Ligfærd”. Beyond the latter, the music will probably move more towards ambient, it might become more complex and, if possible, even darker. Only time will tell...

9. Nortt is signed up deep in hearts and heads of many fans and labels. Man could say, that you are in some ways very famous. What are your feelings from that?

I actually don’t think much about it. I don’t seek acclaim. Though, if Nortt affects someone the way music affects me, I’m honoured.

10. Feelings – which is for you most pleasant, which do you like to remove it from your life and which have on you the biggest influence?

I prefer the interaction between various feelings. I enjoy a good laugh as well as I like being sad. The vast majority of the time I am simply mellow. It is definitely the melancholic side that has sculptured my personality. I discovered melancholy and embraced it. I walk in the shadow intentionally and thrive there! I would prefer to remove stress, although every emotion can be constructive.

11. Listening to your music activates in people various emotions, majority surely agree on darkness, sorrow, maybe also cold...how do you personally want, that your music appeals on listeners?

Darkness and sorrow is fine, indeed. If the listener captures the depressing atmosphere and enters a nihilistic mood where life has no significance, then the initial intention of the music is accomplished.

12. Black metal is closely associated also with image. You aren’t reserve and hold this „direction“. Do you wear extreme clothing also in your personal life?

I try to appear relatively anonymously in order to be left alone – overlooked at best. However, metal is a lifestyle that I have lived for more than half of my life. That is of course noticeable. I guess I look like the average metal fan.

13. Your email address foreshadows, that you have something in common with satanism. What is your opinion on religion, satanism and faith generally?

A difficult question to narrow down. In general I despise all religions since the majority is pro-life. It is simply comforting believes for the weak herd that can’t bare the thought of a nihilistic existence. Satanism, as I see it, is an anti religion due to it being opposed to Christianity (mainly). Where religion aim to organise life in order to maintain and improve existence, the vision of Satanism is the opposite: To tear down everything alive and dissolve existence. God(s) is for life, I wish never-ending death. God(s) it the path of light, I follow the path of darkness. Christianity preaches that man is superior, so I praise the beast and practice dehumanisation. It’s a yearning towards dissolving existence and leaving darkness and nothingness to prevail eternally.

14. Let we see in history...Sweden is in Czech Republic famous for its campaign and sack during the Thirty years war. How is that history period perceived in Sweden?

I actually don’t know how Sweden, our brethren nation, views the Thirty Years War. I’d assume it is with great pride due to their victorious battles.

15. To the same history period belongs also fate of one of the famous Czechs, "teacher of nations", Jan Amos Komenský, which some time reacted also in Sweden. How do you perceive influence of that person on European, let us say, worldwide intelligence?

Again, I’m ignorant on this matter. I’m not familiar with the work of Komenský.

16. What plans does Mr. Nortt have in the future?

Not many, hopefully. Finish the recording of the forthcoming album and then begin to gather inspiration for yet another journey beyond known horizons.

17. …it strikes me…do you like horrors as film genre?

Of course! Though, in general, movies are not my preferred form of art. I have difficulties in maintaining concentration throughout the running time, so I rarely remember storylines, messages, actors etc.

18. Do any perverse whims charm you in life?

No. None that I can think of.

19. Surely you don’t employ your free time only to composing music....?

No, of course not, but everything else is irrelevant in this connection.

20. So...it’s all from us. Let me wish you good luck in the future and for whole Mortem zine - STAY NORTT!

I intend to! Thanks for the interview. Unholy Salvation through Death!
