Interview with Shining (Classic interviews)

1. Hi, Shining! Right at the beginning, I'll ask you uncommonly. Due to previous interviews I know, that you like Muse and Manes. How do you like their recent work? Both of the bands have recorded rather unusual albums and are receiving an inconsistent responses.

The last Muse album was a big let down... Inconsistency in itself is nothing negative though. Just listen to Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band.

2. You have averted from your former production with the recent album „V - Halmstad“, also it was destined by your foregoing album. You're heading to slightly sophisticated representation. Was it an aim and do you plan further approximation to melancholic rock/metal style of music rather than depressive black metal even in the future production?

The aim is the same as always. The musical progression doesn't change the fact that we want you (yes YOU) to die a.s.a.p.

3. I guess the major part of listeners will agree with my feelings concerning „V – Halmstad“. Your music doesn't feel as depressive as before. Which spirit should prevail on your brand new album? Did you have any idea, what the listener should feel, listening to it?

Perhaps it's more cathartic and straight forward than the earlier albums. If you don't feel as depressed by this album than the ones before it's your problem. You should have died before this release anyway.

4. As you are writing lyrics in Swedish, most of the fans can't understand what you're actually singing about. Could you tell a few describing words about each of the songs from „V – Halmstad“, mention it's lyrics, maybe even reveal what has given you the inspiration?

"Yttligare Ett Steg Närmare Total Jävla Utfrysning" is actually a continuation of "Ännu Ett Steg Närmare Total Utfrysning" from SHINING II which is basically reflecting a general disgust towards man, nature, well, life in general and kind of expressing the fysiological as well as psychological conditions connected to an ordinary everyday-panic-attack which I have been suffering from more or less each day of my life as long as I can remember. A good remembrance to start off the confession with I believe. "Längtar Bort Från Mitt Hjärta" is a song about hatred towards the emotional spectre within oneself being the sole component working against personal evolution and denial of flesh. It was writen during the first part of "divorce" from my so-called soulmate I had spent my last four years together with and is extremelly hard for me reliving, thus, creating an utter dark edge to the album. "Låt Oss Ta Allt Från Varandra" is not writen by me, but Ynas Lindskog A.K.A. Mörkkh of Swedish band Malign thus, even though the lyric means very much to me, I feel not being the accurate one to discuss. "Besvikelsens Dystra Monotoni" is yet again about the brilliance in remaking ones own mistakes over and over again, realistically reviewing what all "imporant" aspects of life end up in the world of Kvarforth, such as friends who turns to enemies, love that turns to hate, admiriation that turns to envy and love that turns to sorrow. "Åttiosextusenfyrahundra" is unfortunately a concept which cannot be descibed in words, you have to live it whilst the last song of the album "Neka Morgondagen" is simply about the need for all of you to refuse the day of towmorrow. Alltogether, the lyrics on this album is the outcome of a few years in the gutter to put it simple...

5. You were only 14, when "Submit To Selfdestruction“ was composed. You've been raising the nowadays essential Shining theme, right from the beginning. What has conduced you to this subject in your teen-age? You've even had your label in that time. In a black metal underground it's a very unusual activity, for an adolescent youngster.

I'm not Kvarforth but I'll say this: Who gives a shit how old a person was when he started a band? Do people really consider the age of creator of the h-bomb? I believe not.

6. Lately there's a lot of confabulation about your shocking gig in Sweden. There are speculations, whether you wanted to gain status of a cult band band, or if you just like to scare the audience for your own entertainment. Could you tell me, where is the truth? And how did it happened, to gather all those big names of the black metal scene on one stage? Are you facing any problems, owing that depraved performance? Can we look forward to anything extraordinary also in Brno by the end August?

I wasn't there so really can't tell you what happened.

7. Is the nowadays shape of Shining such as you're actually satisfied, or have have you thought about turning different way and start creating music of some other genre? In association with that, including Beethoven's „Moonlight Sonata“ in current album is quite an unexpected event.
What was you inspiration or why did you decided to do this move? Or is it, that you are a passionate fan of classical music?

Personally I think "Till Minne av Daghen" is the most black metal song ever.

8. What music do you enjoy recently? And are there any bands that inspired you during composing „V – Halmstad“, or that you wanted to approximate to? In these days, do you take interest in black metal bands, which are attempting playing suicidal/depressive black metal?

Can't speak for Mr. K. but I don't think there was any band in particular that inspired him to compose the music to "Halmstad". When you've been creating music for so long of course you have alot different influences but to pinpoint one or two bands is impossible.

9. I suppose that you consider suicide as some kind of salvation from the vexation of this world. If I'm not mistaken, why don't you commit suicide? Or are there any specific things, you regard as truly splendid, which has an inexpressible merit for yourself? On the other hand, if you should appoint the facts/things you're really sick of, which would it be?

This question does not deserve an answer really, but I'm a generous guy so I'll respond... In the form of a question. If you feel it is your duty to convince people to either kill themselves or other people in the vicinity or Mr. Idon'tgiveafuck Who, in what way does this have to do with killing yourself first? Ask Aristoteles as he'll be as dumbfounded by this question as we are.

10. Do you have favorite writers, painters or any other artists? Are you a dreamy kind of person, or do you rather value the functional things and tend to live a practical life? What's your opinion about the music, which is bent on awakening man's pride, desire for fight and a specific sense of uniqueness?

Dreaming has a great influence on my life and I know without this I'd loose an interesting part of this existence. The thing is it doesn't matter how much I value my dreams or compositions, I'll always know that everything is totally meaningless in the end.

11. Do you lately maintain playing guitar, or do you only devote yourself to playing keyboards? Can I ask you, what your equipment is, and whether you're satisfied with your current label „Osmose Productions“?

Kvarforth probably plays guitar when performing at birthday parties.

12. Why „The Black Era“ was never released, and when can we expect the DVD „Fy Fan För Livet!“? Could you tell the readers, what can they look forward to?

They can look forward to a study into what makes life great! Hours of pure joy!

13. I won't forbear a little cliché question and ask you to comment every definition of following with a few words: self-harm, christianity, America, politics, drugs.

Self-harm: Obviously it depends... but in the great play of life it's a good thing. Christiantity: The same thing as any other religion/ideology... bullshit unless proven otherwise by, let's say, death. America: The idea of countries is just a funny thing founded by power craving people. The don't exist ergo America doesn't exist. Politics: In the modern days the function of politics is to create a new religion. See answer #1 for further details on this issue. Drugs: A protagonist in the play of life.

14. Finally, I'm wondering how you've been doing these days, if anything significant is going on at the Shining ground and if we have anything to look forward to, except the upcoming concert in Brno?

Personally I'm doing the dance of the shitty life. Don't expect anything from Shining as you'll probably be wrong in the end anyway. Look forward to Christmas instead.

15. Now I would just like to wish you good luck with Shining and dedicate you the last words, with my thanks for the interview.

Thank you to! Good morning!
