Interview with Corpus Christii (Classic interviews)

1. Greets, N.H.! Try to describe me the main events, what happened in Corpus Christii from 1998, any positive or negative memories…And I´m interested, what´s new? Is Corpus Christii still your domain, or you engage more musicians by composing?

Far too many things happen since 1998, specially the constant fight against the people trying to boycot this band and just making my life harder. But in the end it just inspires me more to persist and keep on doing my Mission for the Master Satan.
In all these years there was some moments I felt I should put CC to rest but almost immediatly I felt I just couldn´t.Besides being my main band for already 9 years, it has been also the power which has made me keep my head and heart focus on things.
There has been so many issues with line ups, all in all mostly session musicians, then also the mess with labels not being too sincere. And of course the ridiculous constant political persecutions like if CC had anything to do with politics. It DOESN´T MORONS. Corpus Christii is about Satan and Satan only, and CC being „me“, I think it also shows what is my position about all that political bullshit.
At this present stage, I am focused on releasing the new record „Rising“, already recorded and now just finishing the artwork. It´s a long album, 11 tracks plus Intro and Outro, 58 minutes total, the last chapter of the „torment“ trilogy. A true and sincere ending to what has been a worthy Mission I believe.
For now we just have the confirmation to have it released on DLP through Obscure Abhorrence Germany. No deal done eyt for a CD and Tape version.
For this album I had the help of local drummer Menthor to record something like 80% of the drum parts, he has been session for CC cos Necromorbus left the band.

2. Could you reveal to us anyearer informations of both planned records? Each Corpus Christii album always means light change from the previous one, could we expect anything similar also now?

I think the new record „Rising“ is a fairly normal step from previous „The Torment Continues“. The whole intention for this album is to get the listener in a deep journey from sorrow to now the much more harsh and dissonant weird structures of this album. I´d say it´s not an easy album to listen to for who´s used to the two previous ones still if one knows CC,one knows that CC is always in a constant change, but a rational one. Still the melodies are there, the lines which define CC are there, everything is there, just added much more things to it. From odd dissonant riffs to simple real Doom Metal riffs blended in between the already known CC melodies.
All in all a record to carefully and few times before getting the right „kick“ of what´s pretended. Not sure it´s an album appreciated at the first listen, still one never knows of course.

3. Do you appreciate any songs, albums, which you created, more than others? I´d like to ask you of some „reviews“ on three albums. I think, that nobody could describe, what you created and how you created it, better than you…Also:

Two years after band´s born came debut „Saeculum Domini“:

A real manifest towards all that I was so eager to create, to finally do what I really wanted to. No one to stop me from doing whatever the fuck I wanted. And well, with that mentality and with very few means ,that album was born. To many still considered as CC´s best, to me a record I don´t listen to much anymore but that still strikes me as a real manifest each time I hear it.

If we fail album „The Fire God“, in 2002 came – for me the most fundamental and also the most favourite „In League With Black Metal“ :

Not sure why you say the most fundamental, I mean,“The Fire God“ was indeed an album most people didn´t really know what to think of it. It has so many modern to old school influences. All in all a record I just needed to do cos I wanted to test myself be it technically and also see if I could go outside the normal boundaries. Which I think I achieved. „In League...“ is not even an album, just has 4 new tracks, rest are covers and re-recorded tracks. Was quite a risk but I had fun doing it and still listen to it now and then. For the last gigs we did we played „In League...“ track, works pretty well live.

And your last album „The Torment Continues“ , thanks to it you went on tour:

We did a tour when it was released yes, also few dates since then but it was not due to the new record, just happened. I don´t think C.C. got more known ever since this last album was released. Still I do think it´s the album it sold the most till now, i‘ll never know, labels....

4. What I like, is that fact, you tinge your albums with samples, on „In League with Black Metal“ there was some few, and also in „The Torment Continues“ we can find it. Do you think, that you use bells or other component, which give atmosphere, also in the future?

I don´t think we ever did use much of that, in fact much less in comparison to many other bands. Just happens when it does, nothing we plan to do. I guess all that did its work properly but not something I demand of myself to put in a record. For the new record „Rising“ I didn´t use a single sample, still I did record something as an Outro which I think beats any sample.

5. I know, you hold the view, that music goes hand in hand with lyrics. Did you change you view in the process, do you grow in? Do you belong to that people, who don´t defend of new things? It all could reflect in lyrics…

It has been 9 years since I started C.C. so of couurse many things did change, be it deep inside me or in the band, since both are as One of course. Still through out these years my Mission has beeen of spreading the Word of Satan and that is what I still do, just donow in a much more personal way and less harsh. I lean the listener to use his brain out of just be ravaging against everything. I don´t believe in one having to be the opposite of things, I believe in balance and that is what I try to gain from having C.C. It´s crucial that people know that one grows out of pain and misery, doesn´t mean it leans a person on his knees forever, NO! And that is what the new record „Rising“ is all about, to have been in a battle for so long in pain and despair but all „just“ a learning process in which one can reach the final path. The path which leads to Satan, to God Almighty. So yes, music and lyrics do need to be hand in hand, there´s no other way to do things, specially in Black Metal.

6. Do you compose riffs randomly? Without any previous ideas? Major part of the most quality material rises for example at the nights, when sleep doesn´t come…

I am very spontaneous with my composition, I never do grab my guitar and say to myself „do a riff“, I just do when it happens. Even in studio I don´t pressure myself, just comes so spontaneously and i´m glad it´s that way. Also means that there has been very long periods which I didn´t compose a single riff nor even picked up my guitar. I don´t even consider myself a musician, but a composer. I don´t play well anything but I do think I know how to compose music.
Insomnias...for „Tormented Belief“ it was like that, I composed the whole album in two sleepless nights, two nights in a row I just couldn´t sleep and needed to get it all out somehow. Did it with music and I think the listener can endulge well in what I was living through back then.

7. I´ve never seen any of Corpus Christii concerts, so I´m interested, if you can bring your atmosphere also on the platform? What responses do you note on the platforms cross the time?

There´s gigs that work out, others that don´t, that´s basically it. And mostly due to our vibe or how the crowd is reacting. I feel pretty dismotivated sometimes when I see there just a bunch of losers in the crowd, so then yes, or the gig sucks cos i´m bored or we do in fact a great gig cos we´re pissed. Still it´s up to the listener to know how he felt it, sometimes we do gigs that we really loved but people didn´t think much of it and vice versa also of course.
We just try to deliver things as we do in rehearsals, in fact sometimes I don´t even feel like playing live anymore cos the rehearsals tend to be so intense.
I do like to play live but I think it´s more and more not to gratifying since most people are just there to get drunk and not really be part of the ritual.

8. When you listen to your albums, which feelings do you have? What do you think about? Do you like often listen to your music?

I mostly listen to it as a fan and not the person who did it, this is how I also can listen to my own relearses so often. I just assimilate it all as good releases froma band I like, not as if my own release. But still yes, sometimes it does happen I just assimilate as my own work but that is always harder cos what I do is very personal these days so tends to make me remember things I try to avoid.
It´s very positive that a musician can listen to his own music, I just cann´t bare the bands that say they don´t hear to their own stuff. If one makes music is in the first case to himself, not for others so one has to admire his own art.
For example for this new CC record „Rising“ I listen to it maybe one time a day for already 3 weeks, so yes, I think I can say I listen to my own music...

9. What´s your opinion on female vocals in black metal? In interview with Akhenaten (Judas Iscariot) I read interesting opinion: „Female vocals in black metal? For what? We have other usages for female mouths!“ With this claim came Barbarud from legendary Maniac Butcher, hehe…Nevertheless, what Czech bands do you know?

There´s pretty devoted females in Black Metal, most playing instruments but I know one or two that sing I think they do a good job, maybe better than many male vocalists so one just can´t generalize. To generalize is to end up in the „mouth“ of the people. Still yes, women mouths are also useful for other things...
My fave Czech band has been DarkStorm, since their split with Apolokia. This is a great band, hope to see them live again. Maniac Butcher also has very good releases but not all. Still shame they are no more. There´s more Czech bands I know of but are so keen to Paganism that I won´t even bother saying names.

10. In the lyrics you consider also with theme of death, what is your opinion on life, reincarnation? Do you somethimes think about it, what will be, when…we don´t be?

I do believe in reincarnation but still maybe not in the parameters once is used to hear when taling about reincarnation. Still I think the soul is bound to be stuck in pararel universes for a long period before maybe, just maybe be „transfered“ to a phisical universal body. In many cases people about this and believe cos one needs to rely on something more to just not think this life is so irrelevant, but in most cases it is irrelevant. Though I do strongly believe in something afterwards, after (this) life...

11. Your own label Nightmare productions, how do you describe this „work“? Is it for you rather lightening factor, which offer you meeting with the bands,…? Is in today´s world hard to achieve as label? When did arise that idea to create Nightmare productions?

Nightmare productions is more of an hobby,a way to reach good real BM in Portugal at very cheap prices. Still here not that many people buy records nor do care for many bands so yes, hard for me to persist. Still I do it out of pleasure and my aim is to at least not lose money with it. I think I have done very good releases and they are all sold out.
I do plan to do some more CD releases pretty soon, one being Onirik „Spectre“ 3rd album which is a real dark jewel.
N.P. started in 1998 when I released the CC demo, then I did stop the label and restarted it once I released TheSyre demo, not even sure in what year that was.

12. Are you extreme man in anything?

I´m just a man, not if extreme or not will depend on the visions/ideas of each one. One thing is sure, I don´t try to be extreme, I just am what I´m bound to be.

13. You act in many bands, I purpose, that Corpus Christii is dominant. Is there any other, which is more interesting than others?

I take all my bands in equal value once i´m working with them, I take my time and focus on each element I deal with. My inspiration comes in fases and each fase I know precisely in which band I must focus. I never did play the guitar for one band and come up with a riff for another band, that just doesn´t happen. Still all in all I do focus more on CC cos it´s the band that plays live and I need to constantly find session musicians and so on. Right now i´m preparing things for UTBS fest and after that i´ll probably just focus on the new Morte Incandescente album, it´s about time I work on that. And once the new CC is out i´ll try hook up a tour, but not sure if that will happen or not since it has always been an issue to have CC playing live.

14. How do you bare Portugese weather? I´ve never been in that land, so I don´t know, what it provide, how is it interesting,…Maybe you could help me.

When cold can go to 0degrees,when hot can go to 35degrees, varies like any other country. Also snows in some parts of the country. Not a all year long tropical country like most people think. And in fact recently I was in center Germany and the heat there was much worse than here, cos here at least i´m near the sea. Humidity is also an issue but well, why are we talking weather?

15. Thank you for possibility to support Corpus Christii, and don´t forget – when you go on tour, don´t forget on the Heart of Europe!

Going on tour always depends on tour managers and so on, cos if up to me i´d have played there already. Better than playing always the same places.
Hail Satan!
