1. Hi, Kvaahl! I looked on you myspace page recently to see how are the Kapein getting on with a live gigs and I discovered that you played only 2 concerts during 2005. You don´t want to play live or you just don´t have a opportunities, so what was the reason?
First of all, thanks for not asking about the fucking biography. Well, I dont think that we have a myspace page, and I am very glad about that, because I fucking hate this shit. If we have, its not official. I dont get it why every fuckin so called underground band has one of these crappy pages with tons of this "thanks for the add" bullshit... aah it makes me sick.
But anyway, to answer your question: We had a lot of offers for playing live, actually across europe including germany, france, poland, italy, austria and so on. But there are two reasons why we dont really play live:
1. We dont give a fuck about it
2. We see no point in playing live often. You know, there are a lot of crappy bands around here that play live every fuckin two weeks, and we're not going to end up like these. Noone really cares anymore about them, they simply play far too often. There may be some live gigs in the future, maybe there wont ever be one again. Every further gig we play, could be the last.
2. I have not heard debut "Golgotha", anyway we will be talking mainly about the new album. "Aeon of rust" as a "debut album" for me is a big surprise! It´s undeniable that there are many great bands in germany , you have the one of the most interesting foul territory, but the quality is fluctuating. On yours second album you dived into really vehement and NOISY sound, which is empowered by your particular voice. Do you think that nowadays groups are destituting the atmosphere? Personally I think that a novelty is based on atmosphere.
I think, black metal is all about atmosphere. Thats actually the only thing that matters. When you listen to "Golgotha", you will notice a much more raw sound than on "Aeon". That's because we were of the opinion, that it fits the songs. For the new songs on "Aeon of Rust", we decided that they need a powerful, though raw and harsh sound to unleash all their strength.
There are a lot of albums out there with a real crap sound, nevertheless they create an atmosphere that catches you. But that doesnt mean that as soon as you have a crap sound, you're true. unfortunately, a lot of bands think that way. Even worse, a lot of fans do as well. On the other hand, there are a lot of bands, that do not care for the atmosphere at all, they only care for a perfect, powerful sound. Thats the worst thing you can do to black metal. The sound quality doesn't matter. I can't do anything with perfect sound. BM is supposed to sound fucked up to a certain extent. Its all about the feeling.
3. When you released the "Golgotha" it was out under the well-known Agonia. How this fact helped you, that you hadn´t deal under some minor black metal label. I dont want to make celebrities from Kapein, I´m just thinking.
Of course it was quite good for Kapein as a band that Agonia released the two albums, because they have a quite good distribution and spread the album across the world. But that was not really our main goal. We wanted to have a label that we deliver the artwork and the master cds to, and they do the rest of the business. And thats what Agonia did. From this point of view, we are satisfied with it. There were some difficulties in Studio payment which resulted in annoying delays, but after all, we have the money, so we dont have the trouble that some other bands on Agonia seem to have. I dont impute to Filip that he wants to rip us off.

4. How did you work on "Aeon of rust" lyrics? In my band I am giving precedence to adapt and make lyrics to fit the finished music so I don´t have to change anything. What about you? Do you always have some conceptual idea which you follow?
When I am in a certain mood, it happens that I write down a few lines that later on turn out to be lyrics for a song that we wrote, if we think that the lyrics fit the atmosphere of the song. We havent so far composed a song based on lyrics. If you read the lyrics, you will find out that they all deal with the same topic: hatred towards religion in general, especially christianity, as we see us faced with it more than with any other religion. Some are more abstract and metaphorical, so not to be taken literally, some others are more direct.
5. Once more to the lyrics..Metal archives features the lyric themes as "death/satanism". Influence of satanism is visible on cover art or band logo for example, but I don´t hear the word "satan" too much as it is usual in the other bands. Does that means that you are trying to express otherwise?
Of course, this statement on Metal Archives does not stem from Kapein. To be honest, I dont see any influence of satanism on our cover art. I dont sing about satan, because I dont believe in Satan, nor in god. I am consistently anti-religious, and all members of Kapein are. The only way to truth is extinction of all religions alike. IF there is mentioned god or satan in my lyrics (which wasnt the case so far concerning "satan"), it is meant in a metaphorical way. DEATH TO RELIGION! DEATH TO ALL ITS FOLLOWERS! FUCK OFF AND DIE!!!!
6. The pinnacle of the album for me is in a first song „Imbibing the Grail of Apotheosis“ where you jointed speed, technical playing and foremostly catchy parts which are mostly included in that "saltation" part. Drum sound is showing to be quite important. My question is about a studio where you were recording, if there is something that has changed after the debut, and what is your opinion on your novelty?
I personally also like the first song best, but reactions showed that mostly the title song "Aeon of Rust" and "I breathe fire" seem to be the favs of the listeners. But who gives a fuck. As mentioned before, we wanted the songs on this album to have a decent, raw but powerful sound, thats mainly created through the drums. They're very heavy. We actually recorded the whole album within half a day (if i remembers right) in our rehearsal room with the appreciated help of Victor Bullok, who is a friend and professional sound engineer. I think its no secret that he is also one of the guitarists of Dark Fortress.
It cannot be denied that there was some sort of natural evolution in songwriting between Golgotha and Aeon of Rust.
7. Well, I would continue on the first question... There are lot of bands which are having problems with Agonia rec., are you satisfied with their efforts? Next album will be released by the same label or your contract expired?
We are satisfied with the Golgotha Release. As mentioned before, with the Aeon Release, some things could have gone better, but its alright. We will see how everything works out. We are not bound to Agonia by contract, as we dont sign a contract for more than one release, and we only sign it when the whole album is finished. No need to do it a different way. I havent thought about the release of a new album so far, although we have written some songs already.
8. Kapein is formed by 5 members. This formation is really stable, it suffered just one line-up change. How is this fact reflected on you music? Do you think that a close collective is better for work? Is a music taste of band members similar?
All members are very close friends. Kapein is not one of these bands that just exist for the sake of releasing albums, where no real, profound relationship exists between the members. We celebrate our rehearsals and Kapein will never work other than that. The music taste of the members is almost identical. I could not be part of a band where everyone wants to play something else and a lot of different styles mix together. Likewise, I also wouldn't want to be part of a band where one person creates all the music and the rest is nothing more than puppets.

9. Concerning the albums melodic...I would find in your music more than just primitive black metal layering or worn-out "Darkthrone-like" melodies. You intend to include at least one "worth to remember" moment in your songs, Am I right? What is the insistance on melodic playing? I know that you will never sweeten the music like sugar-cups but the melodies are having a sense for your composing and normal listening too.
We don't really do that intentionally. Our songs were all created in rehearsals and we have no strict concept in writing a song. There doesn't have to be a certain structure, we have no pattern for songwriting. Used wisely, melodies are a good thing, as long as they sound cold and grim, representing the meaning of the music. As already mentioned, its all about the atmosphere that a song creates. Some are a kick in the face, some are frosty, epic and represent despair, agony or wrath. I am personally a fan of albums like Leviathans "Far beyond the light", Armagedda's "Ond Spiritism" and "only true believers" or Arckanum - Kosthoger, which either are quite powerful and with catchy riffing or with a lot of repetitive elements and bring up a very special mood. That is what we are trying to reach also. Making music that appeals to us as listeners. We ourselves are the only audience that counts. Nevertheless, it all comes of its own volition. A riff doesn't have to be complex, it can also be very primitive, as long as it is effective.
10. One unconventional question now. Imagine yourself walking on the street and that you will meet a person wearing a Kapein t-shirt. You can see that he supports the band, and likes the music. Does this leaves a good feeling in you? Are you grateful to these people? This is a really good esteem for sure...
This will sound worn-out, but we do the music mainly for ourselves. Of course it's nice to see people wearing your shirt on festivals or in the streets. But am I grateful for that? No. It only attests good taste.
our music is not intended to earn us money or make ourselves well known in the scene. Fame is but a transient shadow. Actually, far too many people already recognize us. I wear shirts of bands that I like, and I am grateful to them for their works. Not the other way round. If people like what we release, its fine with me. If not, who cares... as long as we like it.
11. Thanks for the interview, perhaps these questions fulfilled yours expectations. Hold your quality status always high!
With regards...
Hail to the truly dedicated! And to all wannabe evil Zine owners that keep sending brainless interview requests: Leave me alone with your pitiful, infantile "666 EVIL SATAN GOAT REGARDS" bullshit. GET LOST, STUPID KIDDIES!! You bore me to death.
