Interview with October Falls (Classic interviews)

1. Hi, friend! In what way is October so especial for you? Are you completely fascinated by all the colors that world provides, the sound of falling leaves or just the atmosphere, which is so typical for the Fall?

The atmosphere, the colours and the smell of nature, everything on fall is stunning. At the end of the fall, the nature’s preparing to hibernate, most of the leaves have decayed and the cold frost covers the woods. All this might sound too romantic or cliché, but that’s how it is. Some enjoy the urban atmosphere, I enjoy the strength and beauty of nature.

2. Immediately I received „The Streams of the End,“ it became my most listened thing of that week. Maybe it’s because of the sound, that isn’t fully crystallic and so October Falls sounds quasi from afar. The listener has to concentrate - polemize with me...

Like with many other records, the main reason for the sound is the fact, that I basically didn’t have enough knowledge or good enough equipments to achieve a better sound and it actually was the first time I had ever mixed this kind of project. However, I’m quite glad how the overall sound ended up to be after it was mastered and the fact, that it’s not too “easy” for a listener, so you have to listed it more to hear everything on it. Now, almost a year later since it was recorded, I’m sure that I have more knowledge and better equipments to use, but I still would not change it, as it’s really a picture of that moment and that’s the way the records should be.

3. Very the acoustic passages evoke the early folk moments, but they definitely involve the main domain of your music - melodies. Do you suppose that having a lead melody in each song is important?

I use a lot of melodies. Basically everything I compose is based in melody-lines instead of traditional riffs. At some parts, the melodies lie hidden behind the wall of distorted guitars and drums, but they’re still there, they’re the basic element of October Falls now and will always be.

4. When you’re composing, are you spontaneous or are you always trying to make some intermezzo, verse, chorus and superimpose it? I don’t want to make Apocalyptica of you, but October Falls have a great deal of a hit potential.

It’s just the way I write songs, I don’t really plan anything when composing a new material, but I’ve notice that I have this pattern, that I use a lot and I’m now trying to break it before every new track sounds like the previous ones did. On the next full-length, the songs will be longer and more epic and every songs is basically attached to the previous, also the same lyrical theme will continue on whole album, so that should be a bit different direction on composing-wise.

5. What does „The Streams of the End“ sound like according to you? Melancholic, blackly, hopefully, romantically …? Variously of course, but what are your inner feelings, while you’re listening to this music?

For me, it sounds like a melancholic, bleak moment. The overall atmosphere is still quite nature oriented, with a respect to our heritage. To make say it simple, it’s music for long desolate journeys in the woods, just as the first two releases were.

6. What was your term when you were composing like? Can we feel it on the album? It’s connected with the previous question a little bit.

The material is done in various sessions within a year, but I believe it still holds the same melancholic, northern atmosphere and hopefully others can hear and feel that too.

7. Each of mixing and mastering works on „TSOTE“ is made by you. Is it because you don’t like interference into your work and you create everything exactly according to your ideals?

Actually “TSOTE” was mixed by me, but H.Sorvali did the mastering for it. Before this release, I basically did everything by myself, but this time I needed some help, as I wasn’t familiar with the art of mastering. I also wanted to make an exception to my previous works and not to do the artwork myself this time, so H.Harmaja/Babalon Graphics took care of the artwork and I’m really satisfied with the result. He also reworked the October Falls-logo and I decided to use the new logo for non-acoustic releases and the older logo for acoustic releases, so it’s easy for people to see if the release is acoustic or not. Mostly I enjoy working alone, without a schedule, that way there’s no need to make compromises.

8. Where was your new album recorded? Judging by the fact, you created an ambient music previously; your private music studio can be the place.

All guitars, vocals and additional sounds were recorded at my personal studio, bass and drums were recorded by the session-players, V.Metsola and M.Auerkallio, by themselves, and I only mixed those.

9. This year was quite significant for October Falls. You changed a musicalface of the band on your EP and you moved from ambient or folk to some „dark metal“. Moreover your new EP brought a change of the publisher. Wasn’t it too much for you in this season?

Basically all material for “TSOTE” was already done and recorded last year, so for me, the material is a bit old already although it was officially released this year. There was no real decision to move away from all acoustic material and acoustic albums will also be released in the future, but I didn’t want to limit the expression to all acoustic material. What comes to the releaser, it indeed changed for “TSOTE” and I’m really glad it did, as Debemur Morti has a very good distribution and they have handled everything very good, I have no complains.

10. You cooperated with Corvus records only on „Marras.“ You had to change your label because of your change of musical sight, hadn’t you?

The change of the label wasn’t really because of the change of the style, but more of seeking a bit wider distribution.

11. Do you have any information how your fans received the new EP?

Not really, but I can see how some people might be disappointed because the style has changed quite a lot for this release. The basic elements of the music are still the same, there are a lot of acoustic guitars and some of the themes on this release, will also appear on the next acoustic mcd, so the people who dislike this kind of approach can also hear those without the wall of distortion and harsh vocals, not everything of course, but some parts. What comes to the reviews, I haven’t seen many reviews yet as the vinyl-version wasn’t promoted that much and the cd has just came out, but most likely there will be more reviews soon, as the real promos are now out.

12. What are your plans for the future? Do you want to continue in your new style or are you going to surprise your fans again?

I’m currently recording a new full-length album, “The Womb of Primordial Nature”, which will most likely come out early next year by Debemur Morti Productions. It will continue the path I took on “TSOTE” and I have a session drummer and bassist for it and their parts are already recorded for it. It will only contain four long songs on it, bound together as one bigger concept. I’ve also recorded a new mcd, Sarastus, what should be out within some weeks and its all acoustic material again. I’ve also recorded one acoustic song for a split 7”, which doesn’t have a release date yet. What happens after these releases are done and released is still undecided. Most likely there will be more releases later, but what, that shall be seen when the time is right.

13. So I think it’s all … Thank you for your music … Best wishes into the future.

Kiitos.
