Interview with Aetherius Obscuritas

1. Hello Viktor. At first I want to apologize for delay with making questions. How are you at present? I hope less flustred then me...

I just got back from hospital, now hanging on and working on some new shit.

2. Because your music was unknown for me until now, I would please you If you could approximate what you emulate with Aetheris Obscuritas from 2002 to listeners in Czech republic (but not only in it). What have you attained and reversely what you missed for inner satisfaction?

Well, if you drew a graph summarizing the happenings and events since 2002 it would look like an upsweeping line. The only thing I’d like to attain is that all the fans who like the same style I play will once have a chance to listen to Aetherius. This is my passion and the shiny, bright light in my life that leads on my way through everything.

3. Because how I mentioned, I heard only „Víziók“, I must keep from the facts, which got to me.I n first case, the nice thing is combination of your mother tongue and English language. It´s natural for you or are you enjoying mixing and connecting your language knowledge? Which language is more comfortable for you? From my point of listener it´s more interesting mother tongue.

I write on both languages since the beginning of AO. There’s no main reason, I simply write English and Hungarian lyrics. My developing knowledge is a good reason for a bit more English in the future, of course, but Hungarian will remain, because it’s a basicly Hungarian band and I dedicate my works for my fellow countryman and that is normal, I believe.

4. I still stay what is coming out from you (in voice). What effect you use for vocals? I can´t help but sometimes it reminds me that one which use Hoest from Taake in „Hordalands Doedskvad“...

I don’t use any effects, I hate all kind of them. This is my own voice, a strong, main mark of the band. Hoest is one of my fav vocalists, so I’m happy to hear such a compliment as yours.

5. I think so that is the time to learned something about process of recording, about how long you compose a album, something about prospective guests, etc.Whatever you say I let only at you...

Most of the riffs and themes born in the actual or the previous year of the releashing, though there are exceptions, for eg. there are riffs and lyrical themes from 2003 in some songs on Víziók. I always record the stuff in my own home studio, Extreme Unction. The drums are recorded at my friend’s studio, in a near city.

6. The strong basics of „Víziók“ are in guitar melodies, which are innumerable. It is important for you to do holds for every track, which will help track easily remember, authentic and it will do imaginary function of refrain?

Every song is different and I don’t have a recipe for making them. I simply try to play catchy, fast and killer guitars and songs with full of musical virtue. Songs with refrains are easier to remember, I agree, most of the songs played on shows have refrain because the audience like those much more.

7. It´s „Víziók“ specific for you by something? Do you change ingress to matters compared to previously? Did you use some new negotiations? Where you personally see the biggest power?

Yes, this is the first full-length material with real drummer, which is a milestone. I did not change things, just tried to do at my best, as always, that’s all. Perhaps the music alters through the years, but just as substantially as my personality. Aetherius Obscuritas is me and about me, my thoughts, ideas, darkest and brightest moments. I cannot choose a song from Víziók, because each has a personal contact with me, a story, a memory, whatever. If I had to choose only one, that would be the title track, I guess.

8. From my point of view it is little bit disadvantage that you put too much tracks. I mean about eight or nine tracks would be enough richly. Do you prefer longer albums, with more tracks or do you put tracks to album such number of tracks as you want? I ask you designedly because all your new albums have more than ten tracks, except first.

In general, there are less then 10 tracks on albums only nowadays. A full-length album (as the title suggests) should contain not less then 10-11 songs. It’s a scam of the label or the band to release a CD with that short length. Why to release such a crap? They should wait just until at least 10 songs are written. If not, then it’s not a real full-length stuff. Intro and outro in most cases is only for filling the length. This is a bad institution.

9. You have got also split with Thokkian Vortex on your account. What you can reveal about this cooperation? Are both groups connected by some theme and by the way what theme you concentrate in group? I haven´t cleare at this...

Kaiaphas (Thokkian Vortex) is one of my fav vocalists, and his vocals on Ancient – Cainian Chronicle had a great influence on me. There’s no special connection between the two bands, we just like what we do and we have similar thoughts in some cases. “The Saturnine Alliance” is our dark uniting, a part of our strange brotherhood.

10. I learned from photo on MySpace page that you performed live. How many concerts with Aetherius Obscuritas have you done? It was only rare actions or would you like concetrate to perform live in the future? Maybe some minor tour for support of novelty...:-)

There had been 3 shows till now, once a year or more rarely. Aetherius is not a full-time band by every means. There’s no time to perform live shows regularly, because of our other activities. Most of the AO live guest members are from my other band, Sudden Death, which eat up our freetime. Furthermore, an Aetherius show must be special, rare and unique. The audience is there to see and listen to the band, because of it’s rare appearance on stage. This is a bilateral honour. We only play for them once a year and they are here only to hear us.

11. Thank you for interview and same for pleasent experience, which listening of your novelty prepared to me. Have a good time.

Thanks for the support and long live the Czech underground! Debemur morti nos nostraque. We are destined for death, we and our works…
