Interview with Spearhead

1. Hails! If we look upon your discography, we would find out that every consequent album has a better production quality. You slowly progressed to more polished sounding which you accomplished with your last effort. How should the listener feel this changes? Do you like experiments or are you changing recording studios or are you still looking for the right one?

It was always our intention after the first album to record at a pro studio. I wouldn’t say we’ve ever ‘experimented’ with studios, or would ever wish to. We spent quite some time looking into the right studio for the second album, and Hertz (Poland) was the one we chose.

2. Because is the “Decrowning the Irenarch” your second full-length album we can found several logical juxtapositions. I would leave that to you. So can you tell us in which aspects you think that the new album differs from the debut?

Yes the progression in musicianship, sound and production are all noticeable. “Decrowning…” differs in many ways to the first album, “Deathless Steel Command”: the song structures are more dynamic, varied and sophisticated, and the whole mood is just more death metal orientated.

3. Although Spearhead music is very fast it doesn’t lacks some interesting changes, various technical finesses etc. You are serving music with elaborated melodies and tempos. Do you agree? How long you it takes you to record one song for example 4 minutes long? Are you perfectionists, that are reworking the same song until it sounds perfect (for you)?

I would agree yes – Spearhead’s music is particularly dynamic. I couldn’t say how long it took to record each song; some songs took much longer than others. At Hertz for example we spent two weeks recording nine tracks, an intro and an interlude. I suppose you could say it took just over a day to record and finalise each song, although obviously the drum tracks were recorded first, then the guitars, then vocals etc.

4. Music itself shows the themes of lyrics. Main source of lyrics is war and similar topics I suppose. Well is there some theme you dedicated yourself to on your debut? Are the lyrics now more elaborated?

The ideologies and concepts have certainly matured over the short years we’ve been in existence. “Decrowning…” deals with the Traditional Eurasian ideas of ascendancy of individuals as well as civilisations, achieved through martial struggle - Martial struggle on the earthly plane and metaphysical martial struggle in the transhuman plane. The lyrics draw inspiration from such examples of this Truth and similar ideas evident throughout history, from the Roman age, to the Napoleonic, and up to World War II.

5. Is there some concept hidden in the new album? Many people are musicalising stories, making trilogies etc. Is something like this possible with Spearhead?

Not a concept as such (see question above) but more a pervading Truth, a certain world-view that many may (wrongly) call a ‘concept’. Perhaps in the future our albums may become ‘conceptual’ but currently what is important is the elucidation through our music of the virtue of a martial tradition.

6. I pointed some thing about the sounding, but one thing still bothers me. First album had more “bassed” mix, sound was heavier and more massive. Novelty sounds more technically and some times almost like death metal. How do you see this kind of progression? It is possible that some day will Spearhead leave black metal genre?

The first album was certainly more raw yes; but I wouldn’t call it ‘black metal’. It had plenty of black metal elements. Yet musically it had more death metal elements. The new release is an all out death metal album in my opinion; musically old-school, yet state of the art and innovative.

7. Now to the label. What can you tell us about Invictus productions? You are signed under them for some time so you surely know about their work. Will Spearhead stay under them?

We were happy with their work in releasing our first album “Deathless…”, and so we naturally stuck with them for “Decrowning…”. We have no contract or anything, we just trust them as a label.

8. Do you plan some tour to support new album?

We are looking into the idea currently, but it will probably be later in the year if it does happen. Though we will surely be doing plenty of gigs, perhaps festivals this year.

9. Had the members of Spearhead experienced army? Is your inspiration taken from real life experiences or you take it from the books and films?

No, none of us. The first album may have been more ‘book’ inspired. But the second album deals with the metaphysics of war more than anything. The only way to truly experience this is through death.

10. At the beginning of my review for “Decrowning the Irenarch” I hold myself with the fact that UK doesn’t have many Black metal bands which are well-known in the world. What do you think about it as a musician and citizen of the country?

I suppose it is down to the fact that we are a small country, cut off from Europe, which makes our black and death metal scene so small and isolated. I’m pretty disappointed with this country’s metal out-poorings, to say the least, but who knows, perhaps times will change.

11. Thank you for the interview, greetings to England and if you happen to tour let the Czech republic become one of your stops!

You’re welcome. We hope to play your country soon for sure. Sic Semper Tyrannis!
