Interview with Falloch (Classic interviews)

1. Greetings to Falloch from Glasgow. First I'd like to congratulate you for the excellent debut, which is in my opinion breath taking for every lover of a good emotional music ...

Thank you! That really means a lot to us. We put a lot of work into the album so It‘s nice to see that people are enjoying it.

2. The album is out since July. Did you noticed any bigger responses and has the album satisfied your expectations?

Our album isn‘t out until September 26th. So far the response from the press has been amazing and there seems to be quite a lot of interest in what we‘re doing, so hopefully this will continue once the album is released.

3. "Where Distant Spirits Remain" is produced by famous Ronan Chris Murphy and released by Candlelight Records label. Was it hard to get yourself under such a big company or you did not think about it at all and just sent your promo to every other label?

Ronan only mastered the album, we produced the album by ourselves. With regards to getting on Candlelight it was very lucky I guess. We posted a song online after receiving a reference track from Ronan to make sure we were happy with how the mastering was going and then within 24 hours of posting that song online Candlelight were in touch with us saying they were interested and asked to hear the rest of the album.

4. You are part of a huge publishing house. Do you feel any pressure from their side or is it a calm and nice cooperation? What are they supposed to do for you and have already done? I mean advertising, video, tour ...

So far we haven‘t really felt any pressure, as the album was completely finished before Candlelight heard it. They have been great to work with and the amount of promotion they are putting into our album is amazing, especially as this is our first release. It‘s really important that we‘ve managed to find a label willing to give us a lot of promotion. They have helped us get some gigs at the start of November alongside some other bands on the label, which we should hopefully be ready for (we‘re still forming a live line up but this should be sorted very soon).

5. You worked with Ronan Chris Murphy. What impression did he make on you? Are you satisfied with the job he has done for you or do you want to work on your next album on your own?

Ronan was great to work with, he was really enthusiastic and he cares a lot about anything he is involved with, so you know you are going to get great results from him. Like I said, he was mastering the album and I feel it‘s always important to get a second set of ears in for this process. With regards to our next album we would be happy to work with him again, perhaps this time in a larger capacity than just as our mastering engineer.

6. I have seen your pictures on the FALLOCH's website. Do you emphasize on your visual side? Is it an integral part of your production so as are the lyrics and music?

As you can probably see our pictures are taken in the Scottish wilderness. This is because we feel a deep connection with the nature of our land and it is an important part of Falloch as a whole. We don‘t really focus too much on the pictures and focus more on making good music instead.

7. Your music is described as an including metal, post-rock and folk. I am interested if these descriptions are just parts of a classic business or if you identify yourself with them. After listening of your album I would say it's bit ambient either. Mostly at "Horizons".

We would probably say that metal, post rock and folk are the 3 most prominent styles in our music, but there are many more that just those mentioned. Like you said, there are some ambient aspects to our album too, so although we‘re described as metal, post rock and folk we don‘t limit ourselves to those styles.

8. I haven't read your lyrics yet. But even without knowing them I was carried away by the atmosphere and dreams and thoughts flew freely through my head :-) Could you tell me something about songs' topics and possible concepts?

That‘s good to know! We don‘t want to much emphasis put on the lyrics. Of course they are an important part of Falloch but we want people to put on our CD and be carried away by the atmosphere of the music. The lyrics are mainly inspired by the Scottish landscape but there are also themes such as nostalgia, longing and sorrow. We never go deep into the meanings behind them, we would rather people read them and took their own meanings from our lyrics.

9. You are relatively young and unknown, but your music is so mature. Do you study any instruments or are you teach-yourself types? Who is the main composer and how do you compose at all?

We‘re both completely self taught, we both compose the songs together. Sometimes one of us comes in with a strong idea for a whole song and other times it starts off with just a small section which we build on. We are generally pretty relaxed when writing together, and we write a lot more but often we decide not to go with certain ideas so as we‘re sure we are writing the best music we can.

10. You announced that Steve Scott has joined you as a drummer. Who is he? Is he famous or unknown artist? What does your cooperation look like that till now you were used to be a two men band.

Steve has been playing in bands around Glasgow for quite a few years, we both knew of him but we had never played with him until he came along to jam with us. At the moment he is playing for us as a live drummer, but when we get around to the next album he may be involved in the recording of that as well.

11. I want to know what you do besides FALLOCH. I guess FALLOCH doesn't earn you a lot of money (yet). Do you get any support from your parents and what do they say to your music?

Our album isn‘t out yet so we haven‘t earned any money from Falloch. We both have part-time jobs to earn us money which we put straight back into the band. We do get a lot of support from our parents and they really like what we‘re doing. We both thought the extreme aspects of our music would put them off but they actually really love the album.

12. Your music is interweave with nature and maybe also with history. Are you interested in ecology, environment and history at all? You live in Glasgow and that is a huge metropolis. Is the city and waterfalls and the river Falloch part of who you are?

We have no real interest in ecology but of course we both think it‘s very important to look after the countryside. We both draw a lot of inspiration from nature and the majestic landscapes of Scotland and also the art, music and language of our country. We both have an interest in our history but that doesn‘t play much role in our music or lyrics. Mainly we deal with themes such as nature, nostalgia, sorrow and longing which are much more personal than historical. We feel no connection with the grey, dreary city at all, this is why we love escaping into the highlands and camping, hill walking and exploring. It‘s like another world to us and it‘s a very liberating experience escaping urban life. The river is a very nice and relaxing spot which we both love visiting from time to time, so I guess you could say that it is part of who we are.

13. I felt a deep melancholy in your music. Seems like the sadness stemmed from the old English repression ...

As I said previously, there‘s no historical theme in our music at all. There is definitely a melancholic feeling in our music but that mainly comes from the feelings of nostalgia and longing from personal experiences.

14. I hear a light touch of Anathema in your music. Do you like Anathema or is it just my delusion? :-)

We both really like their most recent two albums but neither of us listen to much of their music before that.

15. Scottish scene is not so widespread. Could you tell me about any bands that are worth of publicity?

We don‘t think there are not that many bands worth mentioning from Scotland at the moment. Our favourite artists from Scotland are The Twilight Sad (Shoegaze/Rock), Julie Fowlis (traditional folk), There Will Be Fireworks (Post-Rock) and Malcolm Middleton (folk rock).

16. Lately there have been some riots in Great Britain. Have they had any impact on you as the Scots? What is your opinion on this?

They have had no impact on us at all. Nothing ever happened in Scotland, it mainly affected England. It was basically a bunch of thugs and gangsters trashing towns and looting shops. There is no other explanation for it.

17. Would you like to say something to your Czech fans?

We really hope you enjoy our album. It will be out via Candlelight Records on 26th September. We really hope we get the chance to play in your country in the near future. Thank you for the support!
