Už je tomu dosť dlhá doba, odkedy som počul nejaký priamočiary black metal z Británie. Áno, môžeme spomenúť spolky ako Anaal Nathrakh, Reign of Erebus a ďalšie, ale tieto zoskupenia nikdy netrafili presne to, čo hľadám a navyše, nedá sa povedať, že sa jedná o čisto black metal. Na druhej strane ISENSCUR vychádza z hlbokého undergroundu ako neznámy projekt, vysielajúc svoju čiernu silu cez Barghest records, ktorý už niekoľkokrát dokázali, že vydávajú klenot za klenotom. A po pravde, ISENSCUR je ďalšia dobre odvedená práca.
Musím priznať, že po prvom vypočutí som bol trochu sklamaný. Album mi prišiel moc obyčajný a znejúci až príliš jednoducho. Predpokladám, že moje očakávania boli asi prílič iné od toho, čo mi bolo ponúknuté. Ako sa mi ale stáva dosť často keď súdim album príliš rýchlo, posuniem ho radšej na čas stranou a čakám na ten správny moment. Keď som si ho pustil po čase, cez slúchadlá, s čistou mysľou, začal sa predo mnou rozprestierať úplne iný svet. Ako som vravel, album je jednoduchý, ale ponúka ďaleko viac ak je počúvaný pri plnom sústredení.
Pre porovnanie k iným kapelám by som jeho surové znenie prirovnal možno k takým Archgoat alebo občas Darkthrone. Ale aby sme si rozumeli, nikdy by som si nedovolil Mónaþfylen zaškatuľkovať do tej istej skupiny ako spomenuté kapely. V skutočnosti sa nachádza niekde úplne inde a ako celok je prekvapivo slušne progresívny a variabilný. V skratke, to čo tu máme, je čistý black metal starej školy, zahraný vo veľmi unikátnom prevedení, vážnou, zákernou aurou a znepokojujúcimi elementmi, ktoré strhávajú tento album až do doomovych sfér. Ďalší rozdiel sú texty. Človek by mohol očakávať typické "satan-goat fuck" texty, ale po tom čo je pravá tvár Mónaþfylen odhalená, rovnaké prekvapenie bude doručené aj v tomto smere. Celkový dojem, čo vo mne vyvolávajú texty, dávajú tomuto albumu starobylý, bičujúci pocit od všetkého, čo prináša bolesť a hrôzu ľudskej rase od počiatku času. Skúste si pustiť monumentálnu "The Pool of Nerthus" a nezostať v úžase nad tým hnusom.
Dôležitá vec, ktorú treba pripomenúť je, že album by bol zruinovaný, ak by trval dlhšie. 5 pekelných hymien, tesne prekračujúcich pol hodinu je dosť na to, aby stihli rozniesť svoje posolstvo a zachraňuje ho. Je veľmi dobre vidieť, že v časoch, keď sa väčšina anglických kapiel, ktoré mam rád, topia v nedostatku inšpirácii, album ako Mónaþfylen vystupuje z hlbín a dokazuje môj omyl. Navyše, že sa jedna o album, ktorý potrebujem tráviť trochu dlhšie a ktorý mi prinesie viac uspokojenia ako počin, ktorý sa mi páči od prvého momentu. A teraz, keď sa pozerám späť, to isté sa stalo, keď som sa prvýkrát stretol s touto kapelou, po tom čo Barghest zavesili na net skladbu Diaomai. Nevedel som, čo si mám myslieť, ale čas všetko vyjasnil. ISENSCUR držia fakľu britského black metalu pevne vo svojich pazúroch a veľa šťastia každému, kto sa pokúsi im ju zobrať.

„Mónaþfylen“ představuje impozantní monolit syrového, krutého avšak inovativního black metalu. Já osobně byl z této nahrávky nadšen již od počátku neboť podobnou kombinaci hnusné agrese alá Archgoat a rituálního zla Darvulia jsem již dlouho hledal. ISENSCUR nabízí primitivní agresi která vás nutí zatnout pěsit a také monumentální a epickou vlnu hnusu, která vás, jak dobře napsal Simach, donutí zírat s otevřenou hubou. Zajímavé je, že pod nekompromisní a „trve“ (nesnáším to označení) fasádou se skrývá mnoho detailů a zajímavých nápadů. Viz. například závěr „The Pool of Nerthus“, kdy bicí věrně připomínají utichající tlukot srdce. No a závěr desky je prostě neskutečně silný a ohromující. Osobně tímto prohlašuji ISENSCUR, společně s Antinomian a Svartidaudi, za překvapení roku! Mimochodem, možná bych snesl jednu dlouho navíc, případně i variabilnější vokál, jinak zde asi není co vytknout.
“ Mónaþfylen” stands as the imposing monolith of raw, cruel yet innovative black metal. Personally, I had been stoked on this record from the first time I’d heard it because I have been searching for a similar combination of Archgoat’s repulsive aggression and Darvulia’s ritual evilness for quite a long time. ISENSCUR offer primitive aggression which forces you to clench your fists as well as monumental and epic wave of filth which, as Simach aptly stated, will leave you struck by awe. It is interesting that beneath the uncompromising and “trve” façade are many details and interesting ideas. Take a look for example at the ending of “The Pool of Nerthus” where drums emulate the weakening heart-beat. Well and the very ending of the album is just incredibly powerful and stunning. Hereby I personally declare ISENSCUR to be, together with Antinomian and Svartidaudi, one of the most surprising bands of this year! By the way, I wouldn’t mind one additional long song or possibly a more varied vocals. Otherwise there’s nothing else worth criticising from my side.

English Summary
It has been a long time since I had heard any proper black metal from UK. Sure, you can mention Anaal Nathrakh, Reign of Erebus and others but
these bands don't really make it for me and on top of that they aren't purely black metal acts either. On the other hand, ISENSCUR emerged from the deepest underground as an unknown act channelling their black power via Barghest records which
already proved themselves by releasing one jewel after another. And to say the truth, ISENSCUR is another job done well.
I have to admit that at first I was slightly disappointed. The album seemed to be too ordinary and simple sounding. I guess my expectations were too different from what I have been offered. But as it happens quite often that I judge albums too quickly I moved this one aside and waited for the right moment to come. Some time later I played it again, with my headphones on and a clear mind and a completely different world started to reveal before me. The album is, as I said, simple but there is a way more to it when listened properly.
As for comparison I would resort to a raw sound of bands like Archgoat or sometimes even Darkthrone. But again. I would not dare to put Mónaþfylen to the same box as these bands.
In fact, it is completely something else and the whole package is strangely enough progressive and varied. In a nutshell, what we have here is a pure, old school black metal played in a unique way with solemn, vicious aura and disturbing elements which drag this release into almost “doomish” spheres. Another difference lies in the lyrics. One could expect a typical "satan-goat fuck" cliché, but as the true face of Mónaþfylen is revealed
the same will be delivered on this part. The general feeling which I get from the lyrics of this album, is a very ancient, scourging feeling of everything what brings pain and horror to the souls of human race since the dawn of time. Just try listening to the monumental "The Pool of Nerthus" without being awe-struck by its filth.
Another thing that needs to be said is that I think this album would be probably ruined if it was longer. 5 infernal hymns spread slightly over half-hour which is just enough to spread their message and without losing anything. It’s very good to see that in time when most of the English bands I like are drowning in the lack of inspiration, albums like Mónaþfylen rise from the depths and prove me wrong. Moreover it is an album I need to digest a bit longer, which satisfies me more than something what I like from first moment. And now when I look back, the same happened when I collided with this band for the first time after Barghest put out the song “Diaomai” online. I wasn't sure what to think about it but time made it clear to me. ISENSCUR hold up the torch of British black metal in their claws and I wish good luck to anyone who will try to take it from them!
