Interview with Tundra

I am sending hallos to the center of christian world, haha! How are you? Is it all right in band?

Hell Fastred! Saludos from the center of the fucking christian world eheh. Im suffering like a shit for the terrible hot weather, this summer it seems infinite! There were some big changes in the band in the last weeks, some bad and some good, but I hope that all will be fine from now.

2. I cannot forget for the note, written on posters – “antitechnical raw black metal manifesto“ – is it from your head?

We have always considered Tundra a raw black metal band. Some times ago I was speaking with a guy (maybe from Czechia or from Poland) that comes out with this definition for our sound, and we adopted it immediatly, because we believe that our band is an example of how raw black metal must sound: a fucking raw production, no technology, no triggers, no instrumental exercise, just attitude and passion for black metal. Support the No Trigger Campaign!

3. I can see good relationships with people from our country… Let´s start one by one… how have you made cooperation with Long Ago Records? Are you satisfied with Blacky´s service? Even Tundra album was released in Ravenheart…

My deep connection with your country is a long story. I love a lot of bands from Czechia, I grew up with bands like Root, Master's Hammer and Maniac Butcher (one of my favourite bands ever), and I also visited a lot of times your country and every time when I return home I leave a piece of my heart in Czechia. And Im also very interested on musical scene and historical memory of Eastern Europe, so for me was natural to work for a lot of contacts in your country. When we recorded our first stuff, I have immediatly sent some promos to some of my favourite label from Eastern Europe, and between those there was Eclipse Production (now Long Ago Records), that offered us to work together. We have accepted immediatly. Of course we are satisfied of Blacky's work, and also honoured to release our stuff by a label that has produced such great albums of hordes like Inferno, Arkona, Astrofaes and many others. We like Czechia, but it seems that also Czechia likes us eheh, in fact we have friendship and cooperation with Ulvberth from Ravenheart Productions\Silva Nigra, that offered us to release "Ansia" on tape. I like to think that Czechia is our second home, where we have true brothers in arms like Blacky of Long Ago Records and Adramelech of Inferno.

4. First CD was released in 2005. Behind the microphone there we can hear one of most important person of our BM history. Could you tell us more about the cooperation, how was it born, how the recording was going, etc..

The thing were more easy than you can think. I was in contact with Barbarud Hrom, and when our singer Erebo left us, he joined us to record the vocals for "Ansia". He has recorded his parts in his Nhavaah Sound and then we mixed the album here in our studios. Barbarud did an incredible job, in my opinion.

5. You belong to younger bands. Did you have any experience from other band, when you were starting with Tundra?

Yes, we are a young band, but personally Im trying to have a black metal band from 1996. Here in Rome there are not so many people with the right attitude to play in a black metal bands, they prefer to be rockstar. During those years I changed so many drummers, so many guitarist, so many vocalist, and only in 2003 I finally reach the end of the suffering.

6. Somebody could tell the sound on Ansia CD is not totally ok, are you satisfied with it? Would you change something now? Not only on the sound. How about reactions on Ansia?

Yes, someone could tell that the sound of "Ansia" is a shit, but I really don't care. I believe that every kind of music has is own production. If you play Death Metal, you need a certain production. If you play power metal, you need a certain production. But man, here we are speaking about black metal, and black metal is hate, black metal is destruction, black metal is the shit that you scratch from the blackest corner of the life, so the sound must be terrible, scratching, crushing, disturbing, and the production of "Ansia" is fucking scratching and disturbing, and Im quite satisfied of it. Of course there is something that I want to modify for the next album, but the basis of the sound will be the same, I will just try to obtain the same crushing sound but with more power and presence. About the reaction, Im still impressed because we have received a lot of great reactions, also from our country where we don't have any contacts or support.

7. What about the future? Tell us more about your plans.. how it went with Barbarud, etc..

From the middle of October we will start to rehearsal the new material. Many new releases are planned, so we need to dedicate a couple of months to arrange all the new tracks and then we will star to record. We have a lot of ideas and we want to see all of them released. About Barbarud Hrom, unfortunately after the recording of the track for an upcoming 7 inches split with Inferno, he has decided to leave the band because his lack of time to dedicate to the project. Im very unhappy with that, but I totally understand his motivations. His sign on Tundra will remain forever between the notes of "Ansia": I realized a dream having him in my band, and he will be forever a member of Tundra, but now is time to going on. Of course will be not very easy to find a new singer with the right attitude and with a great voice, but now its time to destroy all those fuckers that think that Tundra are only the band "with Barbarud Hrom from Maniac Butcher on vocals". We want to destroy all those fucking bastards with a fucking new album.

8. Your first name was Afterglow, why did you change the name? Were there any deep reasons?

It is not correct. Afterglow was a band that splitted up, and then some members join me to create Tundra.

9. That was really interesting idea to make cover on Maniac Butcher, what a fuck! Which idea it was? We can feel there a little bit amount of experimental Access from Barbarud´s side, probably he was on fire haha :) ).

In the beginning we decided to record a cover of Maniac Butcher for "Ansia", and we asked Barbarud Hrom to record vocals for it. Only after some months Barbarud joined for the whole album. I think that our cover is quite particular, I felt the need to do something particular but also obscure, so during one night I recorded all that you can hear in the cover. I believe that Barbarud appreciated our version, because he asked us to insert it in the vinyl version of the tribute to Maniac Butcher.

10. It would be nice if you could tell us more about lyrical concept of Tundra… where do you také inspiration from, if lyrics are something like mirror in front of your self, or if they are protest against something?

I believe that black metal is a very personal and interior kind of music, so most of the time is a reflection of your blackest and cruel thoughts. I take inspiration directly from my mind and from my heart, I wrote about all the hate that I feel in my normal life, my relationship with humanity and with society. Of course sometimes Im also inspired to write about some dark story taken from a film or from a book.

11. Everyone is influenced by something. Which band has influenced you most? For example you Pesten – you play in VII Arcano band, which is really not black metal project…

Yes, I played in VII Arcano many years ago, but just because I love music and to plays bass, I was so frustrated about the whole problem to find a line up for my black metal band that I decided anyway to join a band to play some gig and record some stuff. My musical influences can be heard in our music, Darkthrone are absolutely my best influence, and also the black metal from Czechia, plus the fucking old german thrash metal and the whole first wave of norwegian black metal. Im also influenced by some particular stuff like film's soundtrack, but you will not hear something similar in my music, ehhe.

12. How do you mark your black metal scene in last few years? Tell us about something good from you black metal forests and meadows…I have done interview with Algol (Hiems), which seems to be kind person, who make interesting music. Have you met his release "Cold Void Journey"?

In the last years many good bands arise from Italy. Unfortunately there is no cooperation, so is all very difficult. I want to reccommend to all hordes like Deathrow, Vacuum, Gosforth, Hiems, and of course the gods Mortuary Drape and my friend Blasphemophagher. About Algol, I have met him one time and is a kind person, his first album with Hiems is very good, Im really interested to listen a new one.

13. Back to the beginning of this interview and back to Czech Republic – which bands do you know, if we do not mind Inferno and Silva Nigra? You are gong to play here, probably you are looking to contact hungry fans :).

Yes, we are going to invading Bohemia, ehehe. In about a week we will leave home to play a gig in Wien (Austria), a gig in Ostrava and one in Brno. I know a lot of bands from Czechia, apart the old gods (Maniac Butcher, Root, Master's Hammer) and our friends Inferno and Silva Nigra: Sekhmet, Adultery, Agmen, Sabathory, Amon, Avenger, Malignant Tumour, Barracuda, Heiden, Colp, Dark Storm, Fleshless, Debustrol, Ingrowing, Detonator 666, Silent Stream Of Godless Elegy, Eledhel, Krvava Prace, Enochian, Moriorr, Martyrium Christi, Isacaarum, Hypnos, Godless Truth, Trollech, Ogmias, Sator Marte, Pandemia, Sorath and some others. Cant wait to play in Czechia and meet some true fucking maniacs.

14. Do you like Italy itself? Do you feel with traditions, which are typical for your country?

I like some aspects of my country. Im into his history and his traditions, and Im proud of it. But actually is not the best place to live, in my opinion.

15. Can we say Tundra is going along roots of old hateful black metal (I mean mainly on old bands, which spell will be mighty all the time) or do you search something other in music?

Yes exactly, we walk on the path of the old school black metal. This is Tundra, and forever will be. we dont need to search something different.

16. That´s all! I hope you are not too bored with these questions! Thanx for you time and see you in the heart of Europe!

First of all, thanx a lot to you Fastred, for your interest in our band, and excuse me for the big delay! Is always a good moment for me when people from Czechia contact me to speak about Tundra. I hope to meet you at our gig in Ostrava or in Brno to share some words and some drinks. Slava Underground!
